Occidental Mindoro’s corn production of 35,073.00 metric tons for the second quarter of 2020 was accounted to 94.28 percent share in the regional production of corn. This was followed by Palawan’s production of 1,099.00 metric tons or a corresponding 2.95 percent share in the regional corn production. Meanwhile, the corn production from other provinces in the region that summed to about 1,028.56 metric tons was only equivalent to 2.77 percent share in the regional corn production.
Corns produced in the MIMAROPA Region were predominantly yellow which were 87.49 percent or 32,547.16 metric tons of the total volume of corn production in the region. Occidental Mindoro, the top producer of corn in the region during the second quarter of 2020, reported 31,081.00 metric tons of yellow corn, which was 88.62 percent of the total corn produced by the province in April-June 2020. Meanwhile, corns produced in Marinduque were predominantly white. It registered 60.21 percent share from a meager 68.76 metric tons of the province’s total corn production.

In terms of the total volume of production within MIMAROPA by type of corn, both the production of yellow and white corns increased during the second quarter of 2020. Production of yellow corn at 32,547.16 metric tons posted an increase of 11.46 percent or 3.347.16 metric tons higher from 29,200.00 metric tons in the same quarter of 2019. Similarly, the production of white corn slightly increased by 1.12 percent from 4,602.00 metric tons in April-June 2019 to about 4,653.40 metric tons in the same period of 2020.

Total corn area harvested slightly grew by 0.81 percent
Total area harvested for all types of corn during the second quarter of 2020 slightly increased by 67.00 hectares or 0.81 percent higher compared to its total area harvested during the same period in 2019. This was due to the expansion in the area harvested across the region. Oriental Mindoro led the increase in the area harvested with additional 133.00 hectares or an upsurge of 79.17 percent to its current level of 301.00 hectares. This was followed by Occidental Mindoro with 33.00 hectares augmented to its current area harvested of 7,522.00 hectares.

All provinces in the MIMAROPA Region exhibited an increase in their average corn yield. Occidental Mindoro recorded the highest corn yield with 4.66 metric tons per hectare which was also the only province that exceeded the regional average yield during April-June 2020.
TECHNICAL NOTES
Corn Production Survey (CPS) is a major quarterly agricultural survey conducted by the Philippine Statistics Authority. Its main objective is to generate estimates and forecasts of corn production, area and yield, and other production-related data that serve as inputs to the Performance of Agriculture Report, and accordingly to the preparation of the Gross Domestic Product. The survey also supports the data needs of planners, policy and decision makers on corn, and stakeholders in the agricultural sector, and the general public.
Data gathered in CPS are as follows: (1) production, area planted / harvested and yield by ecosystem and by seed type; (2) usage of seeds, fertilizer and pesticides; (3) source of irrigation water and adequacy, monthly distribution of production and area harvested; (4) farm household disposition of production; (5) area with standing crop, farmer’s planting intention for the quarter; and (6) farmer’s awareness and availment of corn program interventions.
Corn production refers to the quantity of corn produced and actually harvested during the reference period. It includes those harvested but damaged, stolen, given away, consumed, given as harvesters’ and thresher’s shares, reserved, etc. Corn production from seed growers which are intended for seed purposes is excluded from the survey.
Two types of corn harvested are considered in corn production. These are as follows:
- White corn is a type of corn used primarily for human consumption.
- Yellow corn is generally used as feed grains. It includes all types of corn other than white corn.
Area harvested refers to the actual area from which harvests are realized. This excludes crop areas which were totally damaged. The harvest area refers to the effective area on corn where harvesting is done during the reference quarter.
Yield is an indicator of production derived by dividing the total production by the area harvested.
