SECOND QUARTER 2021 CORN SITUATION IN MIMAROPA
Total volume of corn production in the MIMAROPA Region was estimated at 34,744 metric tons in April-June 2021. Among provinces in the region, Occidental Mindoro’s corn production of 31,738 metric tons for the second quarter of 2021 recorded the highest share of about 91.3 percent in the regional production of corn. This was followed by production in Palawan of 1,814 metric tons with a corresponding 5.2 percent share in the regional corn production. Meanwhile, the combined corn production from Oriental Mindoro, Romblon, and Marinduque of 1,192 metric tons was only accounted to 3.4 percent share in the MIMAROPA’s total corn production.

During the second quarter of 2021, corns produced in MIMAROPA Region were mostly yellow which were 31,350 metric tons or 90.2 percent of the total volume of corn production in the region. Yellow corns were predominantly produced in Occidental Mindoro, Oriental Mindoro, and Palawan with corresponding share of 92.6 percent, 87.1 percent, 65.3 percent, and 49.6 percent to the total corn production in their respective province. Meanwhile, corns produced in Marinduque were entirely white, similarly Romblon produced predominantly white corns which accounted to 50.4 percent share of its total corn production.

Volume of corn production decreased by 6.6 percent
In the second quarter of 2021, MIMAROPA region recorded a total corn production of 34,744 metric tons. This translates to 6.6 percent or 2,457 metric tons decrease from its corn production of 37,201 metric tons in the same quarter last year. The decrease in production was due to the cut-back of Occidental Mindoro and Oriental Mindoro with 3,335 metric tons (9.5 percent) and 120 metric tons (15.7 percent), respectively. Meanwhile, corn production in Palawan, Romblon and Marinduque posted an increase by 715 metric tons (65.1 percent), 224 metric tons (113.7 percent), and 59 metric tons (86.2 percent), accordingly.

Both types of corn produced within MIMAROPA Region exhibited decline relative to second quarter 2020. The production of yellow corn dropped by 1,197 metric tons (3.7 percent), while the production of white corn went down by 1,259 metric tons (27.1 percent).

The decrement in the production of yellow corns was mainly driven by the provinces of Occidental Mindoro, Oriental Mindoro, and Marinduque, with a total decline of 1,793 metric tons. Likewise, white corn obtained a 27.1 percent cut-back due to the combined 1,689 metric tons decrease from the provinces of Occidental Mindoro and Oriental Mindoro in April-June 2021.
Total corn area harvested shrank by 8.1 percent
Total area harvested for all types of corn during the second quarter of 2021 reached 7,642 hectares. Among provinces, Occidental Mindoro recorded the largest area harvested of 6,600 hectares. Meanwhile, Marinduque got the smallest area harvested of 36 hectares in April-June 2021.
Figure 5. Area Harvested by Province, MIMAROPA: April-June 2021 and April-June 2020

Total area harvested of the region experienced a decline by 8.1 percent or 673 hectares compared to its recorded 8,315 hectares in the same period in 2020. The posted reduction was due to the cutback of 969 hectares of area harvested in Occidental Mindoro, Oriental Mindoro, and Marinduque during the second quarter of 2021. However, area harvested in Palawan and Romblon showed a total increase of 296 hectares in April-June 2021 compared to the same period last year.
During the April-June 2021, area harvested on both types of corn exhibited an 8.1 percent decline from 8,315 hectares to 7,642 hectares in second quarter of 2020. Yellow corns’ area harvested registered 6,383 hectares, a decrease by 220 hectares or 3.3 percent from its area harvested of 6,603 hectares during the same quarter in 2020. This accounted to 83.5 percent share of the region’s total area harvested. Similarly, white corns’ area harvested of 1,259 hectares was 26.5 percent lesser or dropped by 453 hectares compared to the recorded area harvested of 1,712 hectares during the second quarter of 2020.

Yellow corns’ area harvested was smaller due to the reported 382 hectares decrease in the area harvested of Occidental Mindoro, Oriental Mindoro, and Marinduque during the second quarter of 2021. Likewise, white corn’s area harvested obtained downturn by 26.5 percent due to the total of 593 hectares decline from the provinces of Occidental Mindoro and Oriental Mindoro.
Average corn yield remains at 4.5 metric tons per hectare
During the second quarter of 2021, the average corn yield in the region retained at 4.5 metric tons per hectare. Among provinces in the region, only Occidental Mindoro with an average yield of 4.8 metric tons per hectare exceeded the regional average yield and recorded the highest average yield. Meanwhile Oriental Mindoro’s average yield of 2.7 metric tons per hectare posted the lowest average yield in April-June 2021.

TECHNICAL NOTES
Corn Production Survey (CPS) is a major quarterly agricultural survey conducted by the Philippine Statistics Authority. Its main objective is to generate estimates and forecasts of corn production, area and yield, and other production-related data that serve as inputs to the Performance of Agriculture Report, and accordingly to the preparation of the Gross Domestic Product. The survey also supports the data needs of planners, policy and decision makers on corn, and stakeholders in the agricultural sector, and the general public.
Data gathered in CPS are as follows: (1) production, area planted / harvested and yield by ecosystem and by seed type; (2) usage of seeds, fertilizer and pesticides; (3) source of irrigation water and adequacy, monthly distribution of production and area harvested; (4) farm household disposition of production; (5) area with standing crop, farmer’s planting intention for the quarter; and (6) farmer’s awareness and availment of corn program interventions.
Corn production refers to the quantity of corn produced and actually harvested during the reference period. It includes those harvested but damaged, stolen, given away, consumed, given as harvesters’ and thresher’s shares, reserved, etc. Corn production from seed growers which are intended for seed purposes is excluded from the survey.
Two types of corn harvested are considered in corn production. These are as follows:
1. White corn is a type of corn used primarily for human consumption.
2. Yellow corn is generally used as feed grains. It includes all types of corn other than white corn.
Area harvested refers to the actual area from which harvests are realized. This excludes crop areas which were totally damaged. The harvest area refers to the effective area on corn where harvesting is done during the reference quarter.
Yield is an indicator of production derived by dividing the total production by the area harvested.
