PSA MIMAROPA Enjoins Support for the Conduct of the 2021 Global Adult Tobacco Survey
15 November 2021 – CALAPAN CITY. The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) announces the conduct of the 2021 Global Adult Tobacco Survey (2021 GATS) in partnership with the Department of Health (DOH) from 03 November to 04 December 2021. Technical support for this DOH-funded survey is provided by the World Health Organization (WHO), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Research Triangle Institute (RTI) International.
The GATS is a national household survey that is being conducted in the Philippines, as well as in several other countries, as part of the Global Tobacco Surveillance System (GTSS). The survey aims to monitor adult tobacco use and track key tobacco control indicators across countries. It includes questions about the use of tobacco products, smoking in various places, tobacco advertisements, and general questions about tobacco products and health. Both smokers and non-smokers will be included.
As the survey is designed to produce national and urban-rural estimates among all non-institutionalized men and women 15 years of age or older, its results will be used to help the DOH adjust current policies and plan new health programs in the Philippines relative to tobacco control.
A total of 20,292 households in the country have been randomly selected, 578 of which are in the MIMAROPA region, through scientific sampling procedure to represent households across the country.
In this regard, PSA MIMAROPA encourages everyone, especially those selected sample households, to support and actively participate in the conduct of the 2021 GATS by responding truthfully to the questions to be asked by professional Field Interviewers under contract with the PSA. Each household’s participation is voluntary, and all information provided by a household will be kept confidential.
