Summary Inflation Report Consumer Price Index (2012=100): AUGUST 2021

The data presented herein are based on the results of the 2012-based Consumer Price Survey for all income households conducted in Oriental Mindoro during the month.

Inflation rate at the national level jumped to 4.9 percent in August 2021, from 4.0 percent in July 2021. This is the highest inflation recorded since January 2019. In August 2020, inflation rate was lower at 2.4 percent.

The trend increase in the country’s inflation was mainly brought about by the higher annual increment in the index of the heavily-weighted food and non-alcoholic beverages at 6.5 percent during the month, from 4.9 percent in July 2021.

Moreover, recreation and culture index went up by 0.5 percent in August 2021, after recording annual decreases since August 2020. 

Higher annual increases were also registered in the indices of the following commodity groups:

  • Alcoholic beverages and tobacco, 10.3 percent;
  • Clothing and footwear, 1.8 percent;
  • Housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels, 3.1 percent;
  • Furnishing, household equipment and routine household maintenance, 2.5 percent;
  • Transport, 7.2 percent; and
  • Restaurant and miscellaneous goods and services, 3.8 percent.

The other commodity groups, i.e., health, communication, and education, retained their previous month’s annual growth rates.

Inflation rate of Oriental Mindoro in August 2021 posted a lower rate of 5.0 percent compared to last month’s inflation of 5.6 percent in July 2021. Inflation rate of Oriental Mindoro in August 2020 was a slower rate of 2.7 percent (See Figure 1).

By major commodity group, annual inflation rates in August 2021 in the province of Oriental Mindoro are as follows: food and non-alcoholic beverages, 7.0 percent; alcoholic beverages and tobacco, 4.4 percent; clothing and footwear, 2.5 percent; Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels, -1.3 percent; furnishings, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house, 0.9 percent; health, 3.7 percent; transport, 12.6 percent; communication, 0.3 percent; recreation and culture, 5.4 percent; education, 4.2 percent; and restaurants, miscellaneous goods and services, 1.4 percent.

Oriental Mindoro registered a similar month-on-month change in consumer price index (CPI) as was posted in July 2021. The month-on-month change in CPI in the MIMAROPA region also exhibited a similar change calculated at 0.5 percent.  On the other hand, month-on-month change in CPI at the national level showed an increase of 0.6 percent.
