Total employment went up by 22.3 percent

The 2023 List of Establishments (LE) results showed a total employment of 46,677 workers across all the 11,011 establishments in operation within Oriental Mindoro. The total employment went up 22.3 percent from 38,171 workers from all establishments in operation reported from the previous year.

 

Nearly 17 in every 20 workers were employed under the services sector

By broad industry group, the services sector remained as the top employment hub, covering 39,655 workers or 85.0 percent share to the province’s total employment in 2023. In addition, the industry sector employed a total of 6,267 workers or 13.4 percent share. Meanwhile, the agriculture, forestry and fishing sector had 755 workers or 1.6 percent share. Wholesale and Retail Trade; Repair of Motor Vehicles and Motorcycles employed the highest number of workers

In 2023, Wholesale and Retail Trade; Repair of Motor Vehicles and Motorcycles posted the highest number of 20,315 workers among 18 industry sections. This translates to 43.5 percent share of the provincial total employment. This was followed by the total employment in the Accommodation and Food Service Activities with 6,373 workers (13.4% share), Manufacturing with 4,073 workers (8.7% share), Education with 2,838 workers (6.1% share), and Financial and Insurance Activities with 2,660 workers (5.7% share).  (Figure 3)
 

 

Meanwhile, Mining and Quarrying had the least number of employed workers among industry sections in 2023 with only 32 workers (0.1% share). This was followed by Water Supply; Sewerage, Waste Management with 74 workers (0.2% share), Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities with 386 workers (0.8% share), and Real Estate Activities with 415 workers (0.9% share). Micro establishments employed the highest number of workers

In 2023, Oriental Mindoro had 10,343 micro establishments in operation, comprising 93.9 percent of the provincial total. This translates to a total of 28,747 workers covered under micro-establishments that accounts to 61.6 percent share to the total workers in the province. This was followed by small and medium establishments with 14,078 workers (30.2% share) and 2,156 workers (4.6% share), respectively. Large establishments hired the least number of 1,696 workers (3.6% share). (Figure 4)

 

 

Business closures in affected 1,869 establishments translated to 5,011 job losses

On the 1,869 establishments with permanently closed and temporarily stopped operation status leads to 5,011 jobs lost in Oriental Mindoro in 2023. A total of 4,583 job losses (91.5% share) is affected by permanent business closure and 428 job losses (8.5% share) from establishments with temporary stopped operations.   The breakdown of employment losses by year shows that 871 jobs out of 4,583 or 19.0 percent were lost in establishments closed in 2021. In addition, 3,123 jobs (68.1%) were lost in 2022, and 589 jobs (12.9%) were lost in 2023. (Figure 5)
