Province of Palawan Records the Highest Share in the Economy of MIMAROPA Region from 2018 to 2020

 

The Province of Palawan recorded the biggest average share of 35.1 percent, with around 130.57 billion pesos of the 371.64 billion pesos regional economy of MIMAROPA. It was followed by the Province of Oriental Mindoro, with 26.7 percent share, and the City of Puerto Princesa, with 12.8 percent share.

Province of Palawan maintained its status as the only industry-based economy in MIMAROPA Region from 2018 to 2020. Total Industry in the province accounted for about 48.1 percent average share during the period. Meanwhile, Services, and Agriculture, forestry, and fishing accounted for 27.9 percent and 23.9 percent share, respectively.

The economy of Palawan grew by 3.8 percent in 2019, but declined by -5.7 percent in 2020. Industries that contributed to the growth were: Agriculture, forestry and fishing with 7.8 percent, followed by Manufacturing, with 10.3 percent, and Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, with 17.1 percent. Meanwhile, the industries that pulled down the performance of the economy of the province in 2020 were: Mining and quarrying declined by -10.5 percent; Accommodation and food service activities dropped by -57.7 percent; and Transportation and storage declined by -28.9 percent.

The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) established through Republic Act No. 10625 or The Philippine Statistical Act of 2013, is tasked, among others, to compile and maintain macroeconomic accounts and indicators, at the national and subnational level. At the provincial level, the Provincial Product Accounts (PPA) is the tool to measure the economic performance of the province or highly urbanized cities (HUCs) at a given time.

Starting this year, the PSA will be releasing annually the provincial level economic performances following the identified pilot provinces and HUCs. The Province of Palawan is one of the pilot provinces for PPA in 2021.
