Explanatory Notes

The data on the number of marriages presented in this special release were obtained from the vital events registered either timely or belatedly, at the appropriate Office of the City/Municipal Civil Registrar throughout the country and subsequently submitted for encoding to the Office of the Civil Registrar General through the Provincial Statistical Offices (PSOs) of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA). The information presented includes provisional vital events that occurred from July to September 2023 based on the data files received by the PSA – Civil Registration Service (CRS) from the PSOs and has undergone initial processing as of 31 July 2024.  Thus, the figures presented herein are still preliminary and may differ from the final count. The vital events of Filipinos abroad are not yet included in this release, but Filipino whose usual residence is abroad and foreign national with vital events occurring in the country during the refence period were included in this report.

Three in every 100 registered marriages take place in the MIMAROPA Region
    
In 2023, there were 13,285 marriages registered in the MIMAROPA Region. This accounts to a 3.3 percent share from the country’s total of 406,331 recorded marriages. (Table A)

Among provinces in the region, Oriental Mindoro posted the highest number of recorded marriages at 3,889. This translates to a 29.3 percent share to the total number of registered marriages in the region. Palawan (excluding the City of Puerto Princesa) came next with a total of 3,474 registered marriages (26.1%).  Meanwhile, Romblon had the lowest number of registered marriages at 990 (7.5%). (Figure 1)

On the other hand, the lone highly urbanized City of Puerto Princesa had a total of 1,311 recorded marriages in 2023. This translates to 9.9 percent of the total marriages reported in the region. (Figure 1)


Number of registered marriages reduces by 7.2 percent

Compared to the number of marriages reported in 2022, MIMAROPA Region realized a 7.2 percent decline from 14,323 recorded marriages to 13,285 registered marriages in the succeeding year. The region’s annual rate of decline was 2.4 percentage points lower than the national level’s annual rate of decline in the total number of registered marriages at 9.6 percent. (Table A)

Relative to the provincial number of reported marriages in 2022, three provinces contributed to the decrease in the region’s total number marriages. Palawan (excluding the City of Puerto Princesa) had the largest decline in the number of marriages at 693 or a decrease by 16.6 percent. Oriental Mindoro and Romblon followed with a corresponding decline of 400 marriages (9.3% decrease) and 318 marriages (24.3% decrease), respectively. (Figure 2)

Three in every 20 reported marriages in 2023 happens in February

The monthly reporting of marriages in 2023 began in January with 1,045 registered marriages in the MIMAROPA Region. This contributes to a 7.9 percent share in the region’s total registered marriages. Moreover, the number of reported couples who tied the knot peaked during February with a total of 2,073 marriages (15.6%), while the lowest value of recorded marriages happened during November with 551 marriages (4.1%). Further, the year ended with a total of 1,551 reported marriages (11.7%) in the month of December.  (Figure 3)

Relative to the monthly reporting of marriages from the previous year, it can be noted that nine out of 12 months posted a decline in the number of registered marriages. The month with the largest decline was April with a difference of 681 marriages or a decline by 25.0 percent.  The month of December ranked second with a difference of 213 marriages (12.1% decrease), while the month of September ranked third with a difference of 172 marriages (18.0% decrease). February is the most frequent month of marriage in Marinduque

In 2023, a total of 1,045 marriages were reported in Marinduque, an 11.2 percent increase from 940 registered marriages in the previous year. (Table A and Figure 4)

The highest registration was recorded in the month of February with 183 marriages or 17.5 percent share to the province’s total registered marriages. This was followed by the months of May and December with 155 registered marriages (14.8%) and 115 registered marriages (11.0%), respectively. Meanwhile, the month with the lowest number of registered marriages was in August with 23 recorded marriages (2.2%). (Table A and Figure 4)


Nearly one-third of total marriages in Occidental Mindoro happen in February

A total of 2,576 marriages were reported in Occidental Mindoro for the year 2023. This translates to an increase by 11.4 percent from 2,312 registered marriages in the previous year. (Table A and Figure 5)

The highest registration was recorded in the month of February with 818 marriages or 31.8 percent share to the province’s total registered marriages. This was followed by the months of April and May with 294 registered marriages (11.4%) and 263 registered marriages (10.2%), respectively. Meanwhile, August was the month with the lowest number of recorded marriages at 65 (2.5%). (Table A and Figure 5)

Registered marriages in Oriental Mindoro decline by 9.3 percent

In 2023, there were 3,889 marriages recorded in Oriental Mindoro. This was 9.3 percent lower than the reported 4,289 marriages in the previous year.

The highest registration was recorded in the month of June with 568 marriages or 14.6 percent share to the province’s total registered marriages. This was followed by the months of May and February with a corresponding 462 registered marriages (11.9%) and 403 registered marriages (10.3%). Meanwhile, November had the lowest number of registered marriages at 125 (3.2%).   (Table A and Figure 6)

Registered marriages in Palawan diminish by 16.6 percent

A total of 3,474 marriages were recorded in Palawan (excluding the City of Puerto Princesa) in the year 2023. This figure was 16.6 percent lower than the reported 4,167 marriages in the previous year. (Table A and Figure 7)

The highest registration was recorded in the month of December with 482 marriages or 13.9 percent share to the province’s total registered marriages. This was followed by the months of May and March with a corresponding 477 registered marriages (13.7%) and 378 registered marriages (10.9%). Meanwhile, the month with the lowest number of registered marriages was in August with 170 marriages (4.9%).  (Table A and Figure 7)

Registered marriages in Romblon diminish by 24.3 percent

In 2023, a total of 990 marriages were recorded in Romblon. This was 24.3 percent lower than the reported 1,308 marriages in the previous year. (Table A and Figure 8)

The highest registration was recorded in the month of December with 210 marriages or 21.2 percent share to the province’s total registered marriages. This was followed by the months of May and February with a corresponding 119 registered marriages (12.0%) and 118 registered marriages (11.9%). Meanwhile, the month with the lowest number of registered marriages was in September with 32 marriages (3.2%).  (Table A and Figure 8)

Registered marriages in the City of Puerto Princesa increase by 24.3 percent

A total of 1,311 marriages were recorded in the City of Puerto Princesa in 2023, a slight increase of 0.3 percent from the reported 1,307 marriages in the previous year. (Table A and Figure 9)

The highest registration was recorded in the month of February with 248 marriages or 18.9 percent share to the city’s total registered marriages. This was followed by the months of December and January with a corresponding 154 registered marriages (11.7%) and 124 registered marriages (9.5%). Meanwhile, April and August had the lowest number of registered marriages at 78 marriages (5.9%) for each month.  (Table A and Figure 9)
