ETHNICITY IN NAUJAN, ORIENTAL MINDORO 

(2020 Census of Population and Housing)

 

About eight in every ten household population has Tagalog as ethnicity

Approximately 86.0 percent (8 out of 10) of Naujan's 109.49 thousand household population in 2020 identified as Tagalog. Other major ethnicities included Alangan Mangyan (6.0%), Ilocano (2.7%), and Bisaya/Binisaya (2.4%).

 

 

 

Tagalog is the dominant ethnic group in almost all barangays

About 91.4 percent (64 out of 70) of barangays in Naujan, Oriental Mindoro, identified Tagalog as the dominant ethnicity.Nine barangays are the most homogenous in terms of ethnicity, with nearly all residents (almost 10 out of 10) in these areas identified as Tagalog. These are Bacungan (99.1%), Mabini (99.6%), Malaya (99.4%), Motoderazo (99.2%), Poblacion I (99.0%), Poblacion II (99.9%), San Antonio (99.8%), Santiago (99.9%), and Santa Cruz (99.6%).

Mangyan-Alangan emerged as the dominant ethnicity in barangay Metolza (60.5%), barangay Balite (92.3%), barangay Banuton (95.9%), barangay Caburo (95.5%), barangay Magtibay (96.5%), and barangay Paitan (93.2%).

 

 

Majority of the household population are Non-Indigenous Peoples

Among the 109.49 thousand household population, 101.68 (or 92.9%) identified as non-Indigenous Peoples (non-IPs). The remaining 7,816 residents belong to the following categories: Indigenous Peoples (IPs) identified by the National Commission on Indigenous People (NCIP): 7,730 (7.1%), Foreign ethnicities: 56 (0.1%), Individuals identified as both IPs and Muslim tribes by NCIP and National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF): 24 (0.02%), Muslim tribes identified by the NCMF: 5 (0.005%).

 

 

Indigenous Peoples comprise 7.1 percent of the household population

In 2020, IPs identified by NCIP comprised 7.76 thousand or 7.1 percent of the 109.49 thousand household population in Naujan, Oriental Mindoro. The top five IP groups in the barangay accounted for about 96.8 percent of the total IPs. Mangyan-Alangan ranked first with 6,535 persons (84.2%), followed by Mangyan-Tadyawan with 699 persons (9.0%), and Mangyan-Hanunuo with 172 persons (2.2%).

 

 

Muslim tribes make up less than one percent of the household population

Muslim tribes identified by NCMF, including the tribes that were also identified as IPs by the NCIP, accounted for 29 persons or 0.03 percent of the 109.49 thousand household population in Naujan, Oriental Mindoro. Among the Muslim tribes in the barangay, Tausog/Tausug holds the largest share at 34.5% (10 persons), followed by Maguindanao with 9 persons (31.0%).

 

 
About three fifths of the household population with foreign ethnicity are of Swiss descent

Of the 109.49 thousand household population in Naujan, Oriental Mindoro, 56 persons or 0.05 percent were reported to have foreign ethnicity. The top five foreign ethnicities accounted for 44 persons or 78.6 percent of the total foreign ethnicity in the barangay. Swiss ranked first with 34 persons (60.7%), followed by those with Afghan ethnicity with 4 persons (7.1%).

 

 

Statistics presented in this Special Release were based on the information provided by the respondent pertaining to all members of the household.

The categories of ethnicity were provided by the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples and the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos.

In the 2020 CPH, data on the ethnicity of all household members were collected by asking the respondent, “What is __________’s ethnicity by descent/blood/ relation/consanguinity?”
