ETHNICITY IN PUERTO GALERA, ORIENTAL MINDORO (2020 Census of Population and Housing)
About three in every four household population has Tagalog as ethnicity
Approximately 72.6 percent (3 out of 4) of Puerto Galera's 41.65 thousand household population in 2020 identified as Tagalog. Other major ethnicities included Iraya Mangyan (10.8%), Bisaya/Binisaya (5.2%), and Bikol/Bicol (1.7%).
Tagalog is the dominant ethnic group in almost all barangays
About 84.6 percent (11 out of 13) of barangays in Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro, identified Tagalog as their dominant ethnicity. The barangays of Balatero (80.6%), San Antonio (92.8%), and Sinandigan (83.9%) exhibited the highest level of ethnic homogeneity, with a very high percentage of residents identifying as Tagalog.
Conversely, barangay Santo Niño (67.8%), and barangay Aninuhan (68.0%) displayed a lower degree of ethnic homogeneity compared to other barangays with Tagalog Ethnicity.
two barangays reported Mangyan-Iraya as the dominant ethnicity, showcasing a high degree of homogeneity: barangay Villaflor (55.2%), and barangay Baclayan (88.5%).
Majority of the household population are Non-Indigenous Peoples
Among the 41.65 thousand household population, 34.89 (or 83.8%) identified as non-Indigenous Peoples (non-IPs). The remaining 6,758 residents belong to the following categories: Indigenous Peoples (IPs) identified by the National Commission on Indigenous People (NCIP): 5,257 (12.6%), Individuals identified as both IPs and Muslim tribes by NCIP and National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF): 591 (1.4%), Foreign ethnicities: 538 (1.3%), Muslim tribes identified by the NCMF: 372 (0.9%).
Indigenous Peoples comprise 14.9 percent of the household population
In 2020, IPs identified by NCIP comprised 6.22 thousand or 14.9 percent of the 41.65 thousand household population in Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro. The top five IP groups in the barangay accounted for about 94.2 percent of the total IPs. Mangyan-Iraya ranked first with 4,513 persons (72.6%), followed by Maranao with 505 persons (8.1%), and Sama/Samal with 362 persons (5.8%).
Muslim tribes make up 2.31 percent of the household population
Muslim tribes identified by NCMF, including the tribes that were also identified as IPs by the NCIP, accounted for 963 persons or 2.31 percent of the 41.65 thousand household population in Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro. Among the Muslim tribes in the barangay, Maranao holds the largest share with 505 persons (52.4%), followed by Sama/Samal with 362 persons (37.6%).
About fifteen percent of the household population with foreign ethnicity are of British descent
Of the 41.65 thousand household population in Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro, 538 persons or 1.29 percent were reported to have foreign ethnicity. The top five foreign ethnicities accounted for 303 persons or 56.3 percent of the total foreign ethnicity in the barangay. British ranked first with 81 persons (15.1%), followed by those with German ethnicity with 74 persons (13.8%).

The categories of ethnicity were provided by the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples and the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos.
In the 2020 CPH, data on the ethnicity of all household members were collected by asking the respondent, “What is __________’s ethnicity by descent/blood/ relation/consanguinity?”
