ETHNICITY IN ROXAS, ORIENTAL MINDORO (2020 Census of Population and Housing)

 

About one in every two household population has Tagalog as ethnicity

Approximately 51.1% (1 out of 2) of Roxas's 58.82 thousand household population in 2020 identified as Tagalog. Other major ethnicities included Bisaya/Binisaya (19.9%), Romblomanon (14.3%), and Buhid Mangyan (3.9%).

 

 

 

Tagalog is the dominant ethnic group in most barangays

About 70.0 percent (14 out of 20) of barangays in Roxas, Oriental Mindoro, identified Tagalog as their dominant ethnicity. The barangays of Libertad (82.0%), San Isidro (82.1%), and Little Tanauan (80.6%) exhibited the highest level of ethnic homogeneity, with a very high percentage of residents identifying as Tagalog.

Conversely, barangay Cantil (39.8%), and barangay San Mariano (44.2%) displayed a lower degree of ethnic homogeneity compared to other barangays with Tagalog Ethnicity.

Three barangays reported Romblomanon as the dominant ethnicity, showcasing a high degree of homogeneity: Happy Valley (59.0%), San Jose (45.4%), and San Rafael (48.1%).

 

 

Majority of the household population are Non-Indigenous Peoples

Among the 58.82 thousand household population, 53.81 (or 91.5%) identified as non-Indigenous Peoples (non-IPs). The remaining 5,005 residents belong to the following categories: Indigenous Peoples (IPs) identified by the National Commission on Indigenous People (NCIP): 4,859 (8.3%), Foreign ethnicities: 65 (0.1%), Muslim tribes identified by the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF): 40 (0.07%), Individuals identified as both IPs and Muslim tribes by NCIP and NCMF: 39 (0.07%).

 

 

Indigenous Peoples comprise 8.4 percent of the household population

In 2020, IPs identified by NCIP comprised 4.94 thousand or 8.4 percent of the 58.82 thousand household population in Roxas, Oriental Mindoro. The top five IP groups in the barangay accounted for about 92.8 percent of the total IPs. Mangyan-Buhid ranked first with 2,294 persons (46.5%), followed by Mangyan-Hanunuo with 2,030 persons (41.1%), and Bantoanon with 141 persons (2.9%).

 

 

Muslim tribes make up less than one percent of the household population

Muslim tribes identified by NCMF, including the tribes that were also identified as IPs by the NCIP, accounted for 79 persons or 0.13 percent of the 58.82 thousand household population in Roxas, Oriental Mindoro. Among the Muslim tribes in the barangay, Iranun/Iraynun holds the largest share with 21 persons (26.6%), followed by Badjao and Palawani, both with 14 persons (17.7%).

 

 

More than one third of the household population with foreign ethnicity are of Swiss descent

Of the 58.82 thousand household population in Roxas, Oriental Mindoro, 65 persons or 0.11 percent were reported to have foreign ethnicity. The top five foreign ethnicities accounted for 53 persons or 81.5 percent of the total foreign ethnicity in the barangay. Swiss ranked first with 24 persons (36.9%), followed by those with British and Chinese ethnicity with 10 persons each (15.4%).

 

 

Statistics presented in this Special Release were based on the information provided by the respondent pertaining to all members of the household.

The categories of ethnicity were provided by the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples and the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos.

In the 2020 CPH, data on the ethnicity of all household members were collected by asking the respondent, “What is __________’s ethnicity by descent/blood/ relation/consanguinity?”
