TECHNICAL NOTES
Corn Production Survey (CPS) is a major agricultural survey conducted by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA). This generates estimates on corn production, area, yield, and other production-related data such as usage of seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides; source of irrigation water and adequacy; farm household disposition of production, etc. that serve as inputs for policymaking and programs on corn. Specifically, the production data generated from the survey are direct inputs to the Value of Production in Philippine Agriculture and Fisheries and to the computation of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), accordingly.
Definition of Terms
Production refers to quantity produced and actually harvested during the reference period. It includes those harvested but damaged, stolen, given away, consumed, given as harvesters’ and threshers’ shares, reserved, etc.
Two corn types in corn production:
1. White corn is a type of corn used primarily for human consumption.
2. Yellow corn is generally used for feed grains. It includes all types of corn other than white corn.
Metric Tons is equivalent to 1,000 kilograms.
Reference quarter/period refers to the period of time during which palay harvesting occurs. (1st Quarter – January to March, 2nd Quarter – April to June, 3rd Quarter – July to September, 4th Quarter – October to December)
Area harvested refers to the actual area from which harvests are realized during the reference quarter (4th Quarter – October to December). This excludes areas that were totally damaged.
Yield is an indicator of production derived by dividing the total production by the area harvested.
