A. Number of Constructions
    
In the MIMAROPA Region, the number of constructions from approved building permits in the second quarter of 2024 estimated at 1,288, translating to an annual increase of 40.5 percent from 917 total number of constructions reported in the same quarter last year. This accounts to a 3.0 percent share to the country’s total number of constructions during the reference quarter.  

Residential buildings had the highest number of constructions

By type of construction, residential buildings reported the highest number of constructions, which summed to 788 or 61.2 percent of the total number of constructions during the quarter. This translates to 44.6 percent increase from the same quarter of the previous year’s count of 545 constructions. Nearly 28 in every 30 residential constructions or 93.0 percent were single type houses with 733 approved constructions. (Figure 1, Table 1, and Table 3)

 

Meanwhile, the non-residential type of constructions was the second highest in terms of number of constructions at 417 or 32.4 percent of the total number of constructions during the quarter. This translates to an annual increase of 27.9 percent. More than 10 in every 15 non-residential constructions or 67.4 percent were commercial buildings with 281 approved constructions. (Figure 1, Table 1, and Table 4)

On the other hand, alteration and repair of existing structures and addition, which refers to any new construction that increases the height or area of an existing building, contributed 2.3 percent and 2.0 percent to the total number of constructions, respectively. Compared with their respective numbers in the same period of the previous year, both addition, and alteration and repair posted an annual increase of 30.0 percent and 11.5 percent. (Table 1 and Table 2)


Number of constructions was highest in Oriental Mindoro

Oriental Mindoro registered the highest number of constructions at 314 or 24.4 percent share to the total number of constructions in the MIMAROPA Region in the second quarter of 2024. This was followed by Palawan (excluding City of Puerto Princesa) with 299 constructions (23.2%) and Romblon with 246 constructions (19.1%). (Figure 2 and Table 2)

 

B. Value of Constructions
    
Total value of constructions went up by 21.1 percent

In the second quarter of 2024, the total value of constructions amounted to PhP 2.740.88 million, reflecting an annual growth of 21.1 percent from the PhP 2,262.69 million value of constructions posted in the same quarter of the previous year. (Table 1)


Non-residential-type recorded the highest value of constructions

The value of non-residential building constructions was at PhP 1,530.82 million. This accounts for 55.9 percent of the total value of constructions during the quarter. Moreover, the total value of non-residential building constructions was 19.8 percent higher than the PhP 1,277.96 million value recorded in the same quarter of 2023. Among non-residential constructions, institutional buildings had the highest value of constructions at PhP 853.37 million (55.7%) and was followed by commercial building constructions whose aggregated value is estimated as PhP 550.27 million (35.9%). (Figure 3, Table 1, and Table 4)

On the other hand, the construction value of residential buildings amounted to PhP 901.97 million or 32.9 percent of the total construction value during the quarter. This translates to a 74.0 percent increment from PhP 518.25 million value of constructions reported in the same quarter last year. Among residential constructions, single houses posted the highest value of constructions at PhP 747.69 million (82.9%). (Figure 3, Table 1 and Table 3)

 

For this quarter, the construction value for addition to existing structures, and for alteration and repair to existing structures were recorded at PhP 31.01 million (1.1%) and PhP 226.54 million (8.3%), respectively. Compared with their respective value of constructions in the same period of the previous year, addition-type of construction declined by 92.9 percent, while alteration and repair posted 631.4 percent annual growth. (Table 1 and Table 2)


Share of Palawan’s value of constructions reached 23.4 percent

Constructions in Palawan (excluding City of Puerto Princesa) were valued at PhP 641.47 million. This translates to 23.4 percent share to the regional value of constructions during the second quarter of 2024. Oriental Mindoro and Marinduque followed with corresponding value of constructions at PhP 626.77 million (22.9%) and PhP 599.57 million (21.9%). (Figure 4 and Table 2)

 

C. Floor Area
    
Reported total floor area of constructions expanded by 75.3 percent

The total floor area of constructions for this quarter was recorded at 271,235 square meters. This corresponds to an annual increase of 75.3 percent from 154,728 square meters of floor area in the same quarter of the previous year. (Table 1)

Non-residential type accounted for more than half of the total floor area of constructions

Non-residential constructions recorded 155,456 square meters or 57.3 percent of the total floor area of constructions during the second quarter of 2024. This translates to an annual increase 53.9 percent compared with the previous year’s same quarter floor area of 101,023 square meters. (Figure 5 and Table 1)

 

On the other hand, residential constructions recorded 112,658 square meters or 41.5 percent of the total floor area of constructions this quarter. This reflects an annual increment of 129.5 percent from the aggregated 49,095 square meters of floor area in the same quarter of 2023. (Figure 5 and Table 1)


D. Average Cost per Square Meter

Average cost of construction went down by 37.0 percent

The average cost of construction in the second quarter of 2024, excluding those for alteration and repair, and other constructions, was estimated at PhP 9,083.65 per square meter. It declined by 37.0 percent compared with the average cost of PhP 14,423.52 in the second quarter of 2023. (Table 1)

Addition to existing structures had the highest average cost of constructions

Among types of construction, addition to existing structures had the highest average cost of PhP 9,935.63 per square meter during the quarter. This was followed by non-residential constructions with PhP 9,847.30 per square meter, and residential constructions with PhP 8,006.29 per square meter. (Table 1)

Duplex / quadruplex construction was the most expensive among types of residential construction

Among residential constructions, duplex and quadruplex posted the highest average cost of PhP 21,053.75 per square meter during the quarter, while apartment or accessoria recorded the lowest average cost of PhP 3,192.51 per square meter. (Figure 6)

 

Institutional buildings were the costliest among non-residential constructions

For this quarter, among non-residential constructions, institutional-type buildings reported the highest average cost of PhP 12,065.15 per square meter. On the other hand, agricultural-type buildings registered the lowest average cost of PhP 2,591.87 per square meter. (Figure 6)
