ETHNICITY IN BACO, ORIENTAL MINDORO 

(2020 Census of Population and Housing)

 

About three in every four household population has Tagalog as ethnicity

Approximately 75.4% (or 3 out of 4) of Baco's 39.81 thousand household population in 2020 identified as Tagalog. Other major ethnicities included Alangan Mangyan (11.8%), Iraya Mangyan (8.4%), and Bisaya/Binisaya (1.7%).

 

 

 

Tagalog is the dominant ethnicity in most barangays

About 85.0 percent (23 out of 27) of barangays in Baco, Oriental Mindoro, identified Tagalog as their dominant ethnicity. The barangay of Putican-Cabulo exhibited the highest level of ethnic homogeneity (99.4%), with nearly all residents (almost 10 out of 10) identifying as Tagalog.

Thirteen other barangays also identified Tagalog as the dominant ethnicity, with a high degree of homogeneity: Alag (94.3%), Catwiran I (98.6%), Catwiran II (92.2%), Dulangan I (92.3%), Lumang Bayan (97.1%), Mangangan II (90.9%), Mayabig (92.5%), Pambisan (97.8%), Pulang-Tubig (92.2%), San Andres (97.8%), Santa Rosa I (91.0%), Tabon-tabon (96.0%), and Poblacion (90.2%).

Dominant Ethnicity in Other Locations:

Mangyan-Alangan (97.0%) emerged as the dominant ethnicity in barangay Lantuyang. Barangay Baras, on the other hand, identified Mangyan-Iraya (94.6%) as its dominant ethnicity.

 

 

Majority of the household population are Non-Indigenous Peoples

Among the 39.81 thousand household population, 31.48 thousand (79.1%) identified as non-Indigenous Peoples (non-IPs). The remaining 8,335 residents belong to the following categories: Indigenous Peoples (IPs) identified by the National Commission on Indigenous People (NCIP): 8,284 (20.8%), Foreign ethnicities: 26 (0.1%), Individuals identified as both IPs and Muslim tribes by NCIP and National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF): 19 (0.05%), Muslim tribes identified by the NCMF: 4 (0.01%).

 

 

Indigenous Peoples comprise20.9 percent of the barangay's household population

In 2020, IPs identified by NCIP comprised 8.2 thousand or 20.9 percent of the 39.81 thousand household population in Baco, Oriental Mindoro. The top five IP groups in the barangay accounted for about 98.4 percent of the total IPs. Mangyan-Alangan ranked first with 4,681 persons (56.4%), followed by Mangyan-Iraya with 3,352 persons (40.4%), and Mangyan-Hanunuo with 69 persons (0.8%).

 

 

Muslim tribes make up less than one percent of the barangay's household population

Muslim tribes identified by NCMF, including the tribes that were also identified as IPs by the NCIP, accounted for 23 persons or 0.06 percent of the 39.81 thousand household population in Baco, Oriental Mindoro. Among the Muslim tribes in the barangay, Maguindanao holds the largest share with 8 persons (34.8%), followed by Maranao with 6 persons (26.1%).

 

 
About three fourths of the household population with foreign ethnicity are of Swiss descent

Of the 39.81 thousand household population in Baco, Oriental Mindoro, 26 persons or 0.07 percent were reported to have foreign ethnicity. The top three foreign ethnicities accounted for 26 persons or 84.6 percent of the total foreign ethnicity in the municipality. Swiss ranked first with 19 persons (73.1%), followed by those with Singaporean ethnicity with 2 persons (7.7%).

 

 

Statistics presented in this Special Release were based on the information provided by the respondent pertaining to all members of the household.

The categories of ethnicity were provided by the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples and the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos.

In the 2020 CPH, data on the ethnicity of all household members were collected by asking the respondent, “What is __________’s ethnicity by descent/blood/ relation/consanguinity?”
