Language/Dialects Spoken in Oriental Mindoro
(2020 Census of Population and Housing)

 

Tagalog is the language generally spoken in 190,570 households in Oriental Mindoro

Based on the 2020 Census of Population and Housing (2020 CPH), Tagalog is spoken in 190,570 households or 88.6 percent of the 215,076 households in the province. Bisaya/Binisaya was the second most generally spoken language at home with 7,734 households or 3.6 percent, followed by Mangyan-Hanunuo with 7,413 households or 3.4 percent. (Figure 1)

 

 

Other languages/dialects such as Mangyan-Buhid, Mangyan-Alangan, Mangyan, Tadyawan, Mangyan-Bangon, Ilocano, Mangyan- Tau-Buid, and Mangyan-Iraya were generally spoken in 7,920 househols or 3.7 percent of the total households in the province. (Table 1)

 

 
Pola is the most homogenous municipality in terms of language spoken by its households

Of the 15 city/municipalities in the province of Oriental Mindoro, Pola was the most homogenous in terms of language/dialect spoken by its households as nearly all of its households generally spoke Tagalog at home with 99.7 percent. Calapan City and Pinamayan followed with 99.3 percent and 97.9 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, the municipality of Bulalacao had only 37.2 percent of its households with Tagalog as the top language spoken at home. (Table 2)

As to the second language/dialect spoken at home, Mangyan-Hanunuo was reported and was highest in the municipalities of Bulalacao and Mansalay with 31.1 percent and 28.7 percent, respectively. This was followed by Bisaya/Binisaya with 17.0 percent. Puerto Galera reported American/English as their second language/dialect most spoken at home with 2.6 percent. (Table 2)

The third language/dialect spoken at home was Bisaya/Binisaya. This was reported highest in the municipalities of Bulalacao and Mansalay with 30.4 percent and 11.9 percent, respectively. This was followed by Mangyan-Buhid with 3.5 percent which was reported in Roxas. (Table 2)

 

 
American English is generally spoken at home in Oriental Mindoro who converse with a foreign language

In 2020, there were 438 households in the province of Oriental Mindoro who generally speak in a foreign language at home. This constituted 0.2 percent of the province’s total number of households not enumerated as homeless during the time of the census. American English ranked first with 361 households as the language they generally spoke at home and had 82.4 percent share among those households in the province who can converse using a foreign language at home. This was followed by Chinese with 19 households or 4.3 percent, German with 13 households or 2.9 percent. (Table 3 and Figure 2)

Household is a social unit consisting of a person or a group of persons who sleep in the same housing unit and have a common arrangement in the preparation and consumption of food.

Language/dialect generally spoken at home refers to the language or dialect generally used or spoken by the members of the household most of the time at home. It provides a measure of the linguistic homogeneity or difference in the population. Specifically, it measures the extent of the actual use of a language/dialect within a household. The Philippines' official languages are Filipino and English.
