Three in every ten households in the MIMAROPA Region own other land 

In the 2020 Census of Population and Housing (2020 CPH), 243.6 thousand households or 30.7 percent of the total 792.8 thousand households reported that they own at least one land apart from the land that they own/occupy at the time of the census. (Figure 1 and Table A) 

Of the total 792.8 thousand households, 139.5 thousand (17.6%) were reported to own agricultural land/s. Households that owned other residential land/s totaled to 166.2 thousand (21.0%) while households that owned agricultural land/s acquired through the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP), as agrarian reform beneficiary reached 12.2 thousand (1.5%). Only 1.4 thousand households (0.2%) had members that owned other types of land/s. (Table A) 

Proportion of households with at least one type of land owned other than they occupy is highest in Palawan 

Among provinces in the region, Palawan (excluding the City Puerto Princesa) had the highest proportion of households with at least one type of land they owned other than the land they occupy, with 35.7 percent. It was followed by Occidental Mindoro (31.7%), and Romblon (31.0%). (Table 1) 

Marinduque, on the other hand, had the lowest proportion of households with at least one type of land they owned other than the land they occupy with 27.9 percent. This was followed by Oriental Mindoro at 28.6 percent. (Table 1) 

Meanwhile in the City of Puerto Princesa, the lone highly urbanized city in the MIMAROPA Region, 22.8 percent of its households owned at least one type of land other than the land they occupy. (Table 1) 

Palawan posts the biggest number of households that own residential, agricultural, and other types of lands 

Among provinces, Palawan posted the highest number of households that own residential lands, with 52.3 thousand households or 37.5 percent of the total  139.5 thousand households that own residential land/s in the MIMAROPA Region. It was followed by the Oriental Mindoro with 29.2 thousand households (20.9%). Marinduque reported the least number of households that own residential lands with 

9.9 thousand households (7.1%). Meanwhile, the City of Puerto Princesa had 

15.4 thousand households (11.0%) that own residential lands.  (Figure 2) 

Moreover, households that own agricultural lands in the MIMAROPA Region were commonly found in Palawan. The province had 55.7 thousand households or 

33.5 percent share to the region’s 166.2 thousand households who own agricultural lands, and an additional 3.7 thousand households or 30.6 percent of the region’s 

12.2 thousand households with agricultural lands acquired through CARP. (Figure 3) 

Owners of agricultural lands were the least in Marinduque with 11.4 thousand households (6.9%), while owners of agricultural lands obtained through CARP were the smallest in Romblon with more than 1.0 thousand households (8.2%). (Figure 3) 

Meanwhile, the City of Puerto Princesa had nearly 8.0 thousand households that own agricultural lands.  This translates to a 4.8 percent share of the total households who own residential lands regionwide.  An additional 606 households (5.0%) in the said highly urbanized city own agricultural lands acquired through CARP as an agrarian reform beneficiary. TECHNICAL NOTES 

1. I. Introduction 

The Philippine Statistics Authority conducted the 2020 Census of Population and Housing (2020 CPH) in September 2020, with 01 May 2020 as reference date. 

The 2020 CPH was the 15th census of population and 7th census of housing that was undertaken in the Philippines since the first census in 1903. It was designed to take inventory of the total population and housing units in the country and collect information about their characteristics. 

The Philippine Standard Geographic Codes as of March 2022 was used for the disaggregation of geographic levels of the 2020 CPH. 

1. II. Data Limitations 

The number of households in this report may not be equal to the reported number in Report No. 1, as the Press Release on Land Ownership excludes households enumerated as homeless. In Report No. 1, the total number of households in the MIMAROPA Region is 792,875 while the coverage of this Special Release includes only 792,834 households. 

The statistics presented in this report were based on the information provided by the respondent or any responsible household member who may provide accurate answers to the questions and give correct information about all the household members.

   ethodology 

The population and housing censuses in the Philippines are conducted on a  “de jure” basis, wherein a person is counted in the usual place of residence or the place where the person usually resides. The enumeration of the population and collection of pertinent data in the 2020 CPH referred to all living persons as of 01 May 2020. 

For land ownership in the 2020 CPH, the respondent was asked, “Does any member of this household own the following...?” This determines if the household has any member/s who own other lands aside from the one that the household is currently occupying. The data were collected using the CPH Form 2 (Common Household Questionnaire). 

1. IV. Concepts and Definition of Terms 

A household is a social unit consisting of a person living alone or a group of persons who sleep in the same housing unit and have a common arrangement in the preparation and consumption of food. 

Agricultural Land/s refer to land/s devoted to or suitable for the cultivation of the soil, planting of crops, growing of trees, raising of livestock, poultry, fish or aquaculture production, including the harvesting of such farm products, and other farm activities and practices performed in conjunction with such farming operations by persons whether natural or juridical and not classified by law as mineral land, forest land, residential land, commercial land, and industrial land. 

 Residential Land/s refer to all lands that have been identified and zoned as residential through the appropriate ordinance by the Local Government Unit (LGU) having jurisdiction over the area. These include residential lands within areas zoned as mixed residential and commercial or mixed residential and industrial (Source: Republic Act 10023, series of 2010). 

Other Residential Land refers to residential lands that the household owns other than the one they are occupying. 

Other Land/s includes commercial lands, industrial lands, ancestral domains, and ancestral lands. The last two categories are distinguished from Torrens Title and other tenurial instruments granted by a government agency or by the court. 

Agricultural land/s, acquired through Comprehensive Agrarian Reform 

Program, Agrarian Reform Beneficiary pertains to land ownership acquired through Emancipation Patent (EP) Holder, Certificate of Land Ownership Award (CLOA), and Homestead Patent (HP), Leasehold Contract (LC).
