ETHNICITY IN BULALACAO, ORIENTAL MINDORO 

(2020 Census of Population and Housing)

 

About two in every five household population has Tagalog as ethnicity

Approximately 35.9 percent (2 out of 5) of Bulalacao's 44.35 thousand household population in 2020 identified as Hanunuo Mangyan. Other major ethnicities included Bisaya/Binisaya (34.5%), Tagalog (20.6%), and Romblomanon (2.4%).

 

 

 

Ethnic Composition in Selected Barangays

Six barangays in Bulalacao, Oriental Mindoro, identified Bisaya/Binisaya as their dominant ethnicity. These include Balatasan (70.8%), Cambunang (46.6%), Maasin (82.6%), Maujao (68.4%), Milagrosa (42.2%), and San Juan (65.3%).

Five barangays identified Hanunuo Mangyan as their dominant ethnicity. Notably, Benli exhibited the highest level of ethnic homogeneity, with 99.8% of residents identifying as such.

Four barangays reported Tagalog as the dominant ethnicity, showcasing a high degree of homogeneity: Bagong Sikat (79.1%), Campaasan (59.3%), Poblacion (41.9%), and San Francisco (50.7%).

 

 

Majority of the household population are Non-Indigenous Peoples

Among the 44.35 thousand household population, 27.72 (or 62.5%) identified as non-Indigenous Peoples (non-IPs). The remaining 16,637 residents belong to the following categories: Indigenous Peoples (IPs) identified by the National Commission on Indigenous People (NCIP): 16,591 (37.4%), Foreign ethnicities: 22 (0.05%), Individuals identified as both IPs and Muslim tribes by NCIP and National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF): 22 (0.05%), Muslim tribes identified by the NCMF: 1 (0.002%).

 

 

Indigenous Peoples comprise 37.4 percent of the household population

In 2020, IPs identified by NCIP comprised 16.61 thousand or 37.4 percent of the 44.35 thousand household population in Bulalacao, Oriental Mindoro. The top five IP groups in the barangay accounted for about 98.9 percent of the total IPs. Mangyan-Hanunuo ranked first with 15,928 persons (95.9%), followed by Karay-a with 288 persons (1.7%), and Mangyan-Ratagnon with 144 persons (0.9%).

 

 

Muslim tribes make up less than one percent of the household population

Muslim tribes identified by NCMF, including the tribes that were also identified as IPs by the NCIP, accounted for 23 persons or 0.05 percent of the 44.35 thousand household population in Bulalacao, Oriental Mindoro. Among the Muslim tribes in the barangay, Maranao holds the largest share with 7 persons (30.4%), followed by Palawani with 6 persons (26.1%).

 

 
About two fifths of the household population with foreign ethnicity are of Swiss descent

Of the 44.35 thousand household population in Bulalacao, Oriental Mindoro, 22 persons or 0.05 percent were reported to have foreign ethnicity. The top five foreign ethnicities accounted for 21 persons or 95.5 percent of the total foreign ethnicity in the barangay. Swiss ranked first with 9 persons (40.9%), followed by those with Chinese ethnicity with 5 persons (22.7%).

 

 

Statistics presented in this Special Release were based on the information provided by the respondent pertaining to all members of the household.

The categories of ethnicity were provided by the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples and the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos.

In the 2020 CPH, data on the ethnicity of all household members were collected by asking the respondent, “What is __________’s ethnicity by descent/blood/ relation/consanguinity?”
