ETHNICITY IN BONGABONG, ORIENTAL MINDORO
(2020 Census of Population and Housing)
About three in every four household population has Tagalog as ethnicity
Approximately 73.5% (3 out of 4) of Bongabong's 76.88 thousand household population in 2020 identified as Tagalog. Other major ethnicities included Bisaya/Binisaya (10.5%), Buhid Mangyan (8.6%), and Bangon Mangyan (2.7%).
Tagalog is the dominant ethnic group in all barangays
About 91.7 percent (33 out of 36) of barangays in Bongabong, Oriental Mindoro, identified Tagalog as their dominant ethnicity. The barangays of Luna (99.5 %) and San Jose (99.2%) exhibited the highest level of ethnic homogeneity, with a very high percentage of residents (almost 10 out of 10) identifying as Tagalog.
Twelve other barangays also identified Tagalog as the dominant ethnicity, with a high degree of homogeneity: Carmundo (93.5%), Labasan (92.7%), Labonan (91.9%), Libertad (91.7%), Malitbog (93.5%), Mapang (98.6%), Polusahi (97.8%), San Isidro (95.7%), Santa Cruz (92.6%), Sigange (96.4%), Aplaya (96.9%), and Bagumbayan I (92.3%).
Dominant Ethnicity in Other Locations:
Mangyan-Buhid emerged as the dominant ethnicity in barangay Batangan (83.8%) and barangay Lisap (64.7%). Barangay Ogbot, on the other hand, identified Bisaya/Binisaya (66.7%) as its dominant ethnicity.
Majority of the household population are Non-Indigenous Peoples
Among the 76.88 thousand household population, 67.28 (or 87.5%) identified as non Indigenous Peoples (non-IPs). The remaining 9,598 residents belong to the following categories: Indigenous Peoples (IPs) identified by the National Commission on Indigenous People (NCIP): 9,528 (12.4%), Foreign ethnicities: 47 (0.06%), Individuals identified as both IPs and Muslim tribes by NCIP and National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF): 22 (0.03%), Muslim tribes identified by the NCMF: 1 (0.001%).
Indigenous Peoples compris 12.4 percent of the household population
In 2020, IPs identified by NCIP comprised 9.55 thousand or 12.4 percent of the 76.88 thousand household population in Bongabong, Oriental Mindoro. The top five IP groups in the barangay accounted for about 96.8 percent of the total IPs. Mangyan-Buhid ranked first with 6,574 persons (68.8%), followed by Mangyan-Bangon with 2,102 persons (22.0%), and Mangyan Hanunuo with 494 persons (5.2%).
Muslim tribes make up less than one percent of the barangay's household population
Muslim tribes identified by NCMF, including the tribes that were also identified as IPs by the NCIP, accounted for 23 persons or 0.03 percent of the 76.88 thousand household population in Bongabong, Oriental Mindoro. Among the Muslim tribes in the barangay, Maranao holds the largest share with 10 persons (43.5%), followed by Tausog/Tausug with 4 persons (17.4%).
About two fifths of the household population with foreign ethnicity are of Swiss descent
Of the 76.88 thousand household population in Bongabong, Oriental Mindoro, 47 persons or 0.06 percent were reported to have foreign ethnicity. The top five foreign ethnicities accounted for 37 persons or 78.7 percent of the total foreign ethnicity in the barangay. Swiss ranked first with 18 persons (38.3%), followed by those with Chinese ethnicity with 6 persons (12.8%).
Statistics presented in this Special Release were based on the information provided by the respondent pertaining to all members of the household.
The categories of ethnicity were provided by the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples and the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos.
In the 2020 CPH, data on the ethnicity of all household members were collected by asking the respondent, “What is __________’s ethnicity by descent/blood/ relation/consanguinity?”
