Majority of the occupied housing units were single houses
    
Based on the 2020 Census of Population and Housing (2020 CPH), a total of 781,435 housing units in the MIMAROPA Region were occupied. Of this total, 754,072 housing units or 96.5 percent were single house. This was followed by occupied housing units in apartment, accessoria, and row house with 11,416 (1.5%), in duplex with 10,952 (1.4%), in other multi-unit residential with 3,822 (0.5%). Meanwhile, 1,173 occupied housing units (0.2%) were condominium / condotel, commercial, industrial, agricultural buildings, institutional living quarters, and other types of building. (Figure 1)

Majority of the occupied housing units have strong materials of the outer walls and roofs

In the MIMAROPA Region, more than 11 in every 25 occupied housing units or 44.7 percent had outer walls made of concrete, brick or stone. This was followed by outer walls of occupied housing units made of bamboo, sawali, cogon, or nipa with 29.2 percent. Moreover, 12.6 percent of the occupied housing units had outer walls made of half concrete, brick or stone and half wood, while 11.0 percent had outer walls made of wood. (Figure 2)

On the other hand, nearly four in every five occupied housing units or 79.5 percent had roofs made of galvanized iron or aluminum. This was followed by the proportion of occupied housing units with roofs made of cogon, nipa or anahaw (14.8%), and concrete or clay tile (1.9%). (Figure 2)


Three-fourths of the housing unit have concrete construction materials of the floor

About 16 in every 25 occupied housing units (64.4%) had concrete construction materials of the floor. Other common construction materials of the housing units in the region are bamboo (15.1%), earth, sand or mud (12.6%), and wood (6.9%). (Figure 3)

Meanwhile, 38.5 percent of the occupied housing units have cement, brick or stone as the finishing materials of the floor. Other common finishing materials of the floor are ceramic tile, marble and granite (17.2%), linoleum (9.0%), and wood plank (5.3%). Moreover, more than a quarter of the housing units in the region (27.3%) do not have any finishing materials of the floor. (Figure 3)


Nine in every ten occupied housing units have one-storey building

One-storey buildings dominates the total occupied housing units in the MIMAROPA Region in 2020 with a total of 721,292 housing units (92.3%). These were followed by 57,642 housing units in two-storey buildings (7.4%), and 2,136 housing units in three-storey buildings (0.3%). (Figure 4)


Four in every five occupied housing units needed minor repair or need not be repaired at all

Four in every five occupied housing units or 80.3 percent only needed minor repair or need not be repaired at all. Meanwhile, the proportion of occupied housing units needing major repair comprised of 14.1 percent. (Figure 5)

Moreover, the rest of the occupied housing units were categorized as unfinished construction (2.2%), under construction (2.0%), under renovation or being repaired (1.2%), and dilapidated or condemned (0.2%).  (Figure 5)

Nearly half of occupied housing units were built within the decade prior to the 2020 CPH
    
About 48.9 percent of the occupied housing units in the MIMAROPA Region were built 10 years prior to the 2020 CPH, that is in the period 2011 to 2020, while 20.9 percent were built during the period 2001 to 2010. The remaining 25.0 percent were built more than 20 years prior to the 2020 CPH with 12.9 percent during the period 1991 to 2000, 6.5 percent during the period 1981 to 1990, and 5.6 percent in 1980 or earlier. Meanwhile, the remaining 5.2 percent of the total occupied housing units had unknown year of built. (Figure 6)

Nearly half of occupied housing units had a floor area of less than 20 square meters

In 2020, occupied housing units with a floor area of less than 20 square meters accounted for 46.7 percent of occupied housing units. This was followed by the housing units with a floor area of about 20 to 29 square meters comprised of 18.7 percent, housing units with floor area of 30 to 49 square meters comprised of 14.0 percent, and with floor area of 50 to 69 square meters comprised of 7.8 percent. (Figure 7)

Meanwhile, occupied housing units with floor area of 120 square meters or larger accounted for 4.6 percent. Those with floor area of ranging from 70 to 89 square meters accounted for 4.7 percent, while those with floor area of about 90 to 119 square meters accounted for 3.5 percent. (Figure 7)

Three in five households occupying a housing unit own or has owner-like possession of the house and lot they reside in

Of the 792,789 households who occupy a housing unit, 58.5 percent owned or had owner-like possession of the house and lot they occupied. Moreover, nearly a quarter or 24.3 percent of the households owned the house while occupying a rent-free lot with consent of the owner. Furthermore, 7.5 percent had rent-free house and lot with consent of the owner, and 5.0 percent rented the house or room including the lot that they occupied. (Figure 8)

The statistics presented in this special release were based on the information provided by the respondent or any responsible member in the household who may provide accurate answers to the questions and give correct information about the housing units. For the following data items, observation of the building/housing unit by the enumerator was allowed during the data collection of the 2020 CPH, namely: a) type of building, b) number of floors of the building, c) construction materials of the roof, d) construction materials of the outer walls, and e) state of repair of the building.
