Less than half of the total households had Internet access
As of 12:01 a.m. of 01 May 2020, the province of Romblon had a total of 77,634 households. Of these, 65.9 percent or 51,126 households reported that they have access to the Internet. This was 13.8 percentage points higher than the regional rate of 52.1 percent. (Table A and Figure 1)
Among municipalities, Alcantara had the highest proportion of its households with Internet access at 74.1 percent. This was closely followed by Looc with 73.9 percent, and Odiongan with 73.2 percent. Meanwhile, Cajidiocan had the lowest proportion with less than two in every five of its households or 36.7 percent have access to the Internet. This was followed by San Fernando with 52.5 percent. (Figure 1)
Odiongan had the most number of households in the province that have access to the Internet
In terms of share to the total number of households in the province, Odiongan posted the highest number of households having Internet access with 18.3 percent share. This was followed by Romblon with 14.4 share to the total household who access the Internet. Concepcion, on the other hand, posted the lowest number of households with Internet access at 1.3 percent. (Table 1)
More than 9 in every 10 households with Internet access reported mobile broadband network as main type of Internet connection
It was reported that 91.3 percent of the households in Romblon have Internet connection through a mobile broadband network. This is an internet connection via a handset, a card (integrated Subscriber Identity Module or SIM card) or a USB modem. (Figure 2)
On the other hand, Internet connection through fixed (wired) narrowband / broadband network were reported by 3.7 percent of the households while 2.5 percent each through fixed (wireless) broadband and satellite broadband networks. (Figure 2).
Mobile broadband was the most common type of Internet connection in the Odiongan
Across all households in the province that reported mobile broadband network as their main type of Internet connection, Odiongan had the highest number of households with 18.4 percent out of the total 48,899 households in Romblon. This was followed by the municipalities of Romblon with 14.5 percent and Looc with 8.2 percent. (Table 2)
For the fixed (wired) narrowband / broadband network, Odiongan had the highest share with 27.7 percent of the total 1,977 households in the province who primarily use the said kind of network in accessing the Internet. This was followed by the municipalities of Romblon (12.4%) and San Fernando (8.9%). (Table 2)
Moreover, Odiongan top those reporting fixed (wireless) broadband network as main type of Internet connection with 26.8 percent share to the province’s 1,346 households. San Agustin and Banton followed with a corresponding share of 9.6 percent and 8.5 percent. (Table 2)
Furthermore, more than a fifth of 1,335 households in the province that mainly connect to the Internet through satellite broadband network is contributed by Odiongan (20.2%). The municipalities of Alcantara and Romblon followed with a corresponding share of 17.2 percent and 13.0 percent. (Table 2)
Nearly 11 in every 20 households used the Internet at home
Home was where most households in Romblon connect to the Internet, with 54.1 percent of the households in 2020. This was followed by those utilizing the Internet at school (11.5%) and at the workplace (11.4%). Furthermore, Internet was also used in mobility, via mobile cellular telephone or other handheld devices that are connected to a mobile phone network, with 10.8 percent share. (Table B and Figure 3)
Across all households in the province that reported their location they commonly access the Internet, Odiongan had the highest number of households with 18.3 percent out of 51,623 households in the province who access Internet at home. Likewise, the same municipality posted the highest share among households that utilizes the Internet across location, namely: in a private establishment (32.9%), at the workplace (25.3%), at a public place (25.0%), at school (20.8%). (Table B)
The municipality of Romblon, on the other hand, had the highest number of households with 25.7 percent out of 10,337 households in the province who access Internet in mobility. The same municipality got the highest share among households that connect to the Internet in an Internet café or computer shop (59.0%) and at another person’s home (26.6%). (Table B)
The statistics presented in this report were based on the information provided by the respondent or any responsible household member who may provide accurate answers to the questions and give correct information about the household.
The following data items were collected by the enumerator from a sample of 20 percent of the total households in the enumeration area/s using CPH Form 3 (Sample Household Questionnaire) or CPH Form 7 (Self-Administered Questionnaire for Sample Household):
1. Internet access (“What type/s of internet access is/are available at home?”), and
2. Internet use (“Where did this household member/s use the internet in the last three (3) months?”)
