Nineteen in every 25 persons aged 5-24 years old are currently attending school
Based on the 2020 Census of Population and Housing (2020 CPH), the MIMAROPA Region had 1,345,631 household population whose age is between five (5) and 24 years old. Of this total, 76.0 percent or 1,023,026 persons attended school during the School Year (SY) 2019-2020. The region’s proportion of school attendance during SY 2019-2020 is 1.0 percentage point higher than the country’s 75.0 percent of household population 5-24 years old who currently attend school during the said school year. Other regions with higher school attendance than MIMAROPA Region include Bicol Region (78.8%), Eastern Visayas (78.7%), Caraga (78.5%), Western Visayas (77.9%), Cordillera Administrative Region (77.0%), Central Visayas (76.9%), and Northern Mindanao (76.7%). (Figure 1)

In terms of sex, male persons aged 5-24 years old accounted for 526,425 (51.5%), while female persons aged 5-24 years old comprised the remaining 496,601 (48.5%) among these aforementioned household population who were currently attending school in SY 2019-2020. (Table 1)

Among five-year age groups, the household population 10 to 14 years comprising of 357,807 persons had the highest share of school attendance during SY 2019-2020 at 96.6 percent. This was followed by household population belonging to 5-9 years old age group at 88.1 percent, and 15 to 19 years with 83.8 percent. In contrast, only 27.4 percent of those household population aged 20 to 24 years were attending school during SY 2019-2020. (Table 1 and Figure 2)
About 1.4 percent of students attend classes in schools located outside their provinces
Of the 1,023,026 household population aged 5-24 years old who attended school in SY 2019-2020, approximately 5.8 percent were enrolled in a school located outside their city/municipality of residence at the time of the census. Specifically, 4.4 percent were enrolled in schools situated in another city/municipality but within the same province and 1.4 percent in schools outside their provinces. Meanwhile, nearly 19 in every 20 students or 94.2 percent attended classes in schools located within their province and city/municipality of residence in SY 2019-2020. (Figure 3)

In terms of sex, more male household population 5-24 years old were enrolled in a school during SY 2019-2020 that is situated within their province and city/municipality of residence (51.7%). Similarly, males comprise the 76 out of 140 persons or 51.7 percent of those 5-24 years old who attended classes in a foreign country during the said school year. (Figure 4)
On the other hand, female household population 5-24 years old constitute the majority of those who are enrolled in a school that is situated outside their city/municipality of residence during SY 2019-2020. That is, females got 52.9 percent share among those persons who currently attending classes within the same province of residence and 52.4 percent share among those persons who currently attending classes in another province. (Figure 4)
Six in every 25 persons aged 5-24 years old is an out-of-school child and youth
Of those 1,345,631 household population aged 5 to 24 years in the MIMAROPA Region, 322,605 persons (24.0%) are out-of-school children and youth (OSCY). In this report, OSCY refers to household members whose age is between 5 years old and 24 years old and who are currently not attending formal school. (Table 2)

Among those 322,605 OSCYs, 51.6 percent were males while 48.4 percent were females. By age group, 66.0 percent were aged 20-24 years, 17.0 percent were aged 15-19 years, 13.1 percent were aged 5-9 years, and 3.8 percent were aged
10-14 years. (Table 2)
The statistics presented in this Special Release were based on the information provided by the respondent or any responsible household member who answered the questions and gave correct information about all the household members.
The following data items, which were designed to collect necessary information on school attendance and place of school were collected for household members aged 5-24 years old from a 20-percent sample household using CPH Form 3 (Sample Household Questionnaire) and CPH Form 7B (Self-Administered Questionnaire for Sample Household):
1. School Attendance (“Did _____ attend school at any time from June 2019 to May 2020?”)
2. Place of School (“In what province and city/municipality did ____ attend school?”)
