ETHNICITY IN POLA, ORIENTAL MINDORO 

(2020 Census of Population and Housing)

 

About nine in every ten household population has Tagalog as ethnicity

Approximately 91.9 percent (9 out of 10) of Pola's 35.46 thousand household population in 2020 identified as Tagalog. Other major ethnicities included Tadyawan Mangyan (2.5%), Bisaya/Binisaya (1.6%), and Bantoanon (0.9%).

 

 

 

Tagalog is the dominant ethnic group in almost all barangays

One hundred percent (23 out of 23) of barangays in Pola, Oriental Mindoro, identified Tagalog as their dominant ethnicity. The barangays of Bayanan (99.5%), Calubasanhon (99.8%), Panikihan (99.1%), Tagbakin, (99.3%), and Campamento (99.5%) exhibited the highest level of ethnic homogeneity, with a very high percentage of residents (almost ten out of ten) identifying as Tagalog.

Conversely, Buhay na tubig (55.2%), Tagumpay (68.8%), and Tiguihan (73.7%) displayed a lower degree of ethnic homogeneity compared to other barangays.

 

 

Majority of the household population are Non-Indigenous Peoples

Among the 35.46 thousand household population, 33.78 (or 95.3%) identified as non-Indigenous Peoples (non-IPs). The remaining 1,673 residents belong to the following categories: Indigenous Peoples (IPs) identified by the National Commission on Indigenous People (NCIP): 1,613 (4.5%), Foreign ethnicities: 39 (0.1%), Individuals identified as both IPs and Muslim tribes by NCIP and NCMF: 18 (0.05%), Muslim tribes identified by the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF): 2 (0.006%).

 

 

Indigenous Peoples comprise 4.61 percent of the household population

In 2020, IPs identified by NCIP comprised 1.63 thousand or 4.61 percent of the 35.46 thousand household population in Pola, Oriental Mindoro. The top five IP groups in the barangay accounted for about 93.4 percent of the total IPs. Mangyan-Tadyawan ranked first with 875 persons (53.6%), followed by Bantoanon with 334 persons (20.5%), and Mangyan with 223 persons (13.7%).

 

 

Muslim tribes make up less than one percent of the household population

Muslim tribes identified by NCMF, including the tribes that were also identified as IPs by the NCIP, accounted for 20 persons or 0.06 percent of the 35.46 thousand household population in Pola, Oriental Mindoro. Among the Muslim tribes in the barangay, Maguindanao holds the largest share with 12 persons (60.0%), followed by Maranao and Palawani, both with 3 persons (15.0%).

 

 
More than two fifths of the barangay's household population with foreign ethnicity are of Swiss descent

Of the 35.46 thousand household population in Pola, Oriental Mindoro, 39 persons or 0.11 percent were reported to have foreign ethnicity. The top five foreign ethnicities accounted for 34 persons or 87.2 percent of the total foreign ethnicity in the barangay. Swiss ranked first with 18 persons (46.2%), followed by those with Chinese ethnicity with 9 persons (23.1%).

 

 

Statistics presented in this Special Release were based on the information provided by the respondent pertaining to all members of the household.

The categories of ethnicity were provided by the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples and the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos.

In the 2020 CPH, data on the ethnicity of all household members were collected by asking the respondent, “What is __________’s ethnicity by descent/blood/ relation/consanguinity?”
