Ethnicity in Mansalay, Oriental Mindoro (2020 Census of Population and Housing)

 

About two in every five household population has Tagalog as ethnicity

Approximately 44.8% (2 out of 5) of Mansalay's 59.11 thousand household population in 2020 identified as Tagalog. Other major ethnicities included Hanunuo Mangyan (30.2%), Bisaya/Binisaya (16.9%), and Romblomanon (3.4%).

 

 

 

Tagalog is the dominant ethnic group in almost all barangays

About 64.7 percent (11 out of 17) of barangays in Mansalay, Oriental Mindoro, identified Tagalog as their dominant ethnicity. The barangay of Maliwanag (97.6%) exhibited the highest level of ethnic homogeneity, with a very high percentage of residents (almost 10 out of 10) identifying as Tagalog.

Seven additional barangays also identified Tagalog as the dominant ethnicity, with a high degree of homogeneity: barangay B. Del Mundo (59.3%), barangay Don Pedro (76.8%), barangay Poblacion (82.2%), barangay Roma (58.8%), barangay Santa Maria (69.0%), barangay Villa Celestial (66.7%), and barangay Santa Teresita (75.6%).

Conversely, barangay Cabalwa (33.3%), barangay Balugo (34.6%), and barangay Santa Brigida (41.7%) displayed a lower degree of ethnic homogeneity compared to other barangays with Tagalog ethnicity.

Four barangays reported Mangyan Hanunuo as the dominant ethnicity: barangay Budburan (44.9%), barangay Manaul (49.4%), barangay Panaytayan (90.7%), and barangay Waygan (46.4%).

 

 

Majority of the household population are Non-Indigenous Peoples

Among the 59.11 thousand household population, 39.92 (or 67.5%) identified as non-Indigenous Peoples (non-IPs). The remaining 19,185 residents belong to the following categories: Indigenous Peoples (IPs) identified by the National Commission on Indigenous People (NCIP): 19,151 (32.4%), Foreign ethnicities: 25 (0.04%), Individuals identified as both IPs and Muslim tribes by NCIP and National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF): 5 (0.008%), Muslim tribes identified by the 3 NCMF: (0.005%).

 

 

Indigenous Peoples comprise 32.4 percent of the household population

In 2020, IPs identified by NCIP comprised 19.16 thousand or 32.4 percent of the 59.11 thousand household population in Mansalay, Oriental Mindoro. The top five IP groups in the barangay accounted for about 99.2 percent of the total IPs. Mangyan Hanunuo ranked first with 17,828 persons (93.1%), followed by Mangyan-Buhid with 1,074 persons (5.6%), and Mangyan-Aromanon with 50 persons (0.3%).

 

 

Muslim tribes make up less than one percent of the household population

Muslim tribes identified by NCMF, including the tribes that were also identified as IPs by the NCIP, accounted for 8 persons or 0.01 percent of the 59.11 thousand household population in Mansalay, Oriental Mindoro. Among the Muslim tribes in the barangay, Maguindanao and Sama/Samal holds the largest share with 3 persons each (37.5%), followed by Maranao with 2 persons (25.0%).

 

 
About two fifths of the household population with foreign ethnicity are of German descent

Of the 59.11 thousand household population in Mansalay, Oriental Mindoro, 25 persons or 0.04 percent were reported to have foreign ethnicity. The top five foreign ethnicities accounted for 23 persons or 92.0 percent of the total foreign ethnicity in the barangay. German ranked first with 10 persons (40.0%), followed by those with British ethnicity with 5 persons (20.0%).

 

 

Statistics presented in this Special Release were based on the information provided by the respondent pertaining to all members of the household.

The categories of ethnicity were provided by the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples and the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos.

In the 2020 CPH, data on the ethnicity of all household members were collected by asking the respondent, “What is __________’s ethnicity by descent/blood/ relation/consanguinity?”
