During July to September 2024, the total volume of corn production in the MIMAROPA Region was estimated at 22,903 metric tons. Among provinces in the region, Occidental Mindoro’s corn production of 13,102 metric tons got the highest share of 57.2 percent in the regional production of corn. This was followed by the production in Palawan at 7,089 metric tons with a corresponding 31.0 percent share in the total corn production of the region. Meanwhile, the combined corn production from Oriental Mindoro, Romblon, and Marinduque of 2,713 metric tons accounted for 11.8 percent share in the MIMAROPA’s total corn production. (Figure 1 and Table 1)
A total of 20,684 metric tons of corn produced in the MIMAROPA Region were yellow during the third quarter of 2024. This accounts for 90.3 percent of the total volume of corn production in the region. Yellow corns were predominantly produced in Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, and Palawan with a corresponding share of 98.1 percent, 97.6 percent, and 80.2 percent to the total corn production in their respective province. (Figure 2 and Table 1)
Meanwhile, corns produced in Romblon and Marinduque were predominantly white which accounted to an estimated share of 93.6 percent and 86.2 percent, respectively in their provincial corn production. (Figure 2 and Table 1)
Volume of corn production down by 1.0 percent
MIMAROPA Region’s corn production of 22,903 metric tons during July to September 2024 was lower by 187 metric tons or 1.0 percent with respect to the regional production of 22,717 metric tons from the third quarter of 2023. Occidental Mindoro significantly contributed to the decrease by 836 metric tons or 6.0 percent cutback in the regional corn production. This was followed by a 299 metric tons downturn from Palawan (4.1% decrease). (Figure 3 and Table 1)
During July to September 2024, the decline in the regional corn production was prominently observed on white corn. White corns produced in the MIMAROPA Region went down by 125 metric tons or 5.4 percent from 2,345 metric tons last third quarter of 2023 to 2,220 metric tons in the same quarter of 2024. The decrease in production was mainly contributed by Palawan (70 metric tons) and Occidental Mindoro (51 metric tons). (Figure 4 and Table 1)
Meanwhile, yellow corns produced within the region during the third quarter of 2024 was registered at 20,684 metric tons, a 1.5 percent increase relative to 20,372 metric tons recorded from the same quarter of the previous year. The increase was attributed to the increment in the production of yellow corns from Oriental Mindoro (1,476 metric tons). (Figure 4 and Table 1)
Total corn area harvested shrinks by 3.3 percent
Total area harvested for all types of corn during July to September 2024 reached 5,918 hectares. Among provinces in the region, Occidental Mindoro recorded the largest area harvested at 3,056 hectares with 51.6 percent share to the regional area harvested. Palawan followed at 2,023 hectares (34.2 percent share). Meanwhile, the provinces of Oriental Mindoro, Romblon, and Marinduque had a combined estimated area harvested of 840 hectares or a corresponding 14.2 percent share to the regional area harvested. (Figure 5 and Table 2)
Compared to the region’s recorded harvested area of 6,123 hectares in the third quarter of 2023, the total area harvested of the region shrank by 205 hectares or a decline of 3.3 percent. The posted reduction in area harvested was mainly contributed by the shrinkage in area harvested from Occidental Mindoro (327 hectares). (Figure 5 and Table 2)
The shrinkage in the area harvested was also contributed by the decline in the area harvested for yellow corns during July to September 2024. The 148-hectare shrinkage in the area for yellow corns was mainly contributed by Occidental Mindoro with a cutback of 307 hectares. (Figure 6 and Table 2)
Moreover, there was also a decrease in area for white corns by 57 hectares which was mainly contributed by Palawan and Occidental Mindoro with a contraction of 22 hectares and 20 hectares, respectively. (Figure 6 and Table 2)
Average corn yield registers at 4.16 metric tons per hectare
The average corn yield of the MIMAROPA Region during July to September 2024 at 3.87 metric tons per hectare, an increase by 4.3 percent from 3.71 metric tons per hectare in the same quarter of 2023. This was contributed mainly by the increase in the average yield in Oriental Mindoro with 85.3 percent followed by Occidental Mindoro (4.1 percent). Meanwhile, Romblon had a 11.0 percent decrease in the average corn yield. (Figure 7 and Table 3)
