During October to December 2024, the total volume of corn production in the MIMAROPA Region was estimated at 10,418 metric tons. Among provinces in the region, Palawan’s corn production of 4,723 metric tons got the highest share of 45.3 percent in the regional production of corn. This was followed by the production in Occidental Mindoro at 3,977 metric tons with a corresponding 38.2 percent share in the total corn production of the region. Meanwhile, the combined corn production from Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, and Romblon of 1,719 metric tons accounted for 16.5 percent share in the MIMAROPA’s total corn production. (Figure 1 and Table 1)

A total of 7,897 metric tons of corn produced in the MIMAROPA Region were yellow during the fourth quarter of 2024. This accounts for 75.8 percent of the total volume of corn production in the region. Yellow corns were predominantly produced in Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, and Palawan with a corresponding share of 95.0 percent, 87.0 percent, and 67.7 percent to the total corn production in their respective province.  (Figure 2 and Table 1)

Meanwhile, corns produced in Marinduque and Romblon were predominantly white which accounted to an estimated share of 88.0 percent and 81.3 percent, respectively in their provincial corn production. (Figure 2 and Table 1)

Volume of corn production down by 7.8 percent

MIMAROPA Region’s corn production of 10,418 metric tons during October to December 2024 was lower by 887 metric tons or 7.8 percent with respect to the regional production of 11,305 metric tons from the fourth quarter of 2023. Occidental Mindoro significantly contributed to the decrease by 588 metric tons or 12.9 percent cutback in the province’s corn production. This was followed by a 363 metric tons downturn from Romblon (61.8% decrease). (Figure 3 and Table 1)

During October to December 2024, yellow corns produced within the region during the fourth quarter of 2024 was registered at 7,897 metric tons, a 4.4 percent decrease relative to 8,262 metric tons recorded from the same quarter of the previous year. The decline was attributed to the reduction in the production of yellow corns from Romblon (266 metric tons), Oriental Mindoro (188 metric tons), and Occidental Mindoro (50 metric tons). Moreover, white corns produced in the MIMAROPA Region went down by 522 metric tons or 17.1 percent from 3,043 metric tons last fourth quarter of 2023 to 2.521 metric tons in the same quarter of 2024. The decrease in production was contributed by Occidental Mindoro (538 metric tons), Romblon (97 metric tons), and Oriental Mindoro (22 metric tons). (Figure 4 and Table 1)

Total corn area harvested shrinks by 6.8 percent

Total area harvested for all types of corn during October to December 2024 reached 3,713 hectares. Among provinces in the region, Palawan recorded the largest area harvested at 1,862 hectares with a 50.2 percent share to the regional area harvested. Occidental Mindoro followed at 1,172 hectares (31.6% share). Meanwhile, the provinces of Oriental Mindoro, Romblon, and Marinduque had a combined estimated area harvested of 679 hectares or a corresponding 18.3 percent share to the regional area harvested. (Figure 5 and Table 2)

Compared to the region’s recorded harvested area of 3,982 hectares in the fourth quarter of 2023, the total area harvested of the region shrank by 269 hectares or a decline by 6.8 percent. The posted reduction in area harvested was contributed by the shrinkage in area harvested from Occidental Mindoro (172 hectares), Romblon (103 hectares), and Oriental Mindoro (81 hectares). (Figure 5 and Table 2)

The shrinkage in the area harvested was also contributed by the decline in the area harvested for white corns during October to December 2024. The 203-hectare shrinkage in the area for white corns was contributed by Occidental Mindoro with a cutback of 179 hectares, Romblon with a decline of 50 hectares, and Oriental Mindoro with a cutback of 18 hectares. (Figure 6 and Table 2)

Moreover, there was also a decrease in area for yellow corns by 66 hectares which was mainly contributed by Oriental Mindoro and Romblon with a contraction of 63 hectares and 53 hectares, respectively. (Figure 6 and Table 2)

Average corn yield registers at 2.81 metric tons per hectare    

The annual average corn yield of the MIMAROPA Region during October to December 2024 was registered at 2.81 metric tons per hectare. Among provinces in the region, Occidental Mindoro exceeded the regional average yield at 3.39 metric tons per hectare. Meanwhile, Marinduque posted the lowest average yield of 2.18 metric tons per hectare. (Figure 7 and Table 3)

The average corn yield of the MIMAROPA Region during October to December 2024 at 2.81 metric tons per hectare, a decrease by 1.2 percent from 2.84 metric tons per hectare in the same quarter of 2023. This was contributed mainly by the decrease in the average yield in Romblon with 15.1 percent, and was followed by Occidental Mindoro (0.1%). Meanwhile, Marinduque had a 12.7 percent increase in the average corn yield. (Figure 7 and Table 3)
