Retail sale of other goods in specialized stores industry group accounted for the major establishments

The Annual Survey of Philippine Business and Industry (ASPBI) final results showed that a total of 2,798 establishments in the formal sector of the economy were engaged in wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles in 2021. This represents an increase of 58.3 percent from the 1,768 establishments recorded in 2020. (Table A)

By industry, majority of the establishments were engaged in retail sale of other goods in specialized stores with 674 establishments or 24.1 percent of the total number of establishments for the section in 2021. This was followed by retail sale of other household equipment in specialized stores with 505 establishments (18.0%), sale, maintenance and repair of motorcycles and related parts and accessories with 363 establishments (13.0%), and retail sale of automotive fuel in specialized stores with 280 establishments (10.0%).  (Figure 1 and Table 1)

Retail sale of other goods in specialized stores industry group employed the highest number of workers

The total employment in the wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles section of the MIMAROPA Region was recorded at 19,768 workers as of 15 November 2021. This indicates an increase of 28.7 percent from the 15,365 workers reported on the same date in 2020.

Of the total workforce for the wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles section, 19,304 workers or 97.7 percent were paid employees, while the remaining were working owners and unpaid workers. (Table A and Table 1)

Among industry groups, retail sale of other goods in specialized stores registered the highest employment of 3,329 workers and a 16.8 percent share to the total employment of the wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles section in the region. This was followed by retail sale of other household equipment in specialized stores with a total of 3,213 workers (16.3%), and sale, maintenance and repair of motorcycles and related parts and accessories with a total of 2,855 workers (14.4%). The wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles section recorded an average of 7 workers per establishment in 2021. This represents a -18.7 percent decline from the reported 9 workers per establishment in the previous year. (Table A and Table 2)

Among industry groups, sale of motor vehicles activities had the highest average employment of 43 workers per establishment. Wholesale of food, beverages, and tobacco; and retail sale in non-specialized stores followed with an average employment of 18 and 13 workers per establishment. (Table 2)


Employees under wholesale of food, beverages and tobacco industry group received the highest average annual compensation

In 2021, the total compensation paid by the section to its employees amounted to PhP 2,624.98 million. This translates to an average annual compensation of PhP 135,981 per paid employee, which indicates a 4.3 percent increase from the recorded average annual pay of PhP 130,358 per paid employee in 2020. By industry group, employees from wholesale of food, beverages and tobacco received the highest average annual compensation of PhP 377,671 per paid employee in 2021. This was followed by the average annual compensation per paid employee from retail sale of food, beverages and tobacco in specialized stores (PhP 186,410), sale of motor vehicles (PhP 166,287), and wholesale of agricultural raw materials and live animals, (PhP 165,810). (Figure 3 and Table 2)


Wholesale of food, beverages and tobacco activities contributed the major share to the total revenue and total expense

The total revenue generated by the wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles section in 2021 reached PhP 59,293.08 million, indicating an increase of 6.8 percent from the PhP 55,536.79 million reported revenue in 2020. On the other hand, the total expense incurred by the section amounted to PhP 54,996.35 million in 2021, which shows a 4.8 percent increase from the PhP 54,486.30 million total expense posted in 2020. Among industry groups, wholesale of food, beverages and tobacco contributed the highest share to the section’s total revenue amounting to PhP 21,470.84 million (36.2%) in 2021. It was followed by retail sale of other goods in specialized stores; wholesale of agricultural raw materials and live animals; and retail sale in non-specialized stores with a corresponding total revenue of PhP 6,916.89 million (11.7%), PhP 4,556.92 million (6.8%), and PhP 4,473.77 million (7.5%). (Figure 4 and Table 1)
In terms of expenses, the top spender was wholesale of food, beverages, and tobacco with PhP 20,648.11 million. This translates to a 37.5 percent share to the section’s total expenses. Retail sale of other goods in specialized stores; retail sale in non-specialized stores; and wholesale of agricultural raw materials and live animals came next with incurred total expenses of PhP 6,417.97 million (11.7%), PhP 4,300.90 million (7.8%), and PhP 3,739.75 million (6.8%), respectively. (Figure 4 and Table 1)

 

Wholesale of machinery, equipment and supplies activities registered the highest revenue per peso expense ratio

In 2021, the revenue per peso expense ratio of the wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles section was recorded at 1.08, which reflects an increase of 1.9 percent from the recorded 1.06 revenue per expense ratio in 2020. This indicates that for every peso spent in 2021, the section generated a corresponding revenue of PhP 1.08. (Table A and Table 2)

By industry group, the wholesale of machinery, equipment, and supplies registered the highest revenue per peso expense ratio at 3.30. The wholesale of agricultural raw materials and live animals came second, with a recorded revenue per peso expense ratio of 1.22. This was followed by the retail sale of automotive fuel in specialized stores and the sale of motor vehicles, with revenue per expense ratios of 1.10 and 1.09, respectively. These industry groups were recorded as having revenue per expense ratios that surpass the regional level. (Table 2)
