Specialized design activities had the most number of establishments in the professional, scientific and technical activities section

The Annual Survey of Philippine Business and Industry (ASPBI) final results showed that a total of 62 establishments in the formal sector of the economy were engaged in professional, scientific and technical activities in 2021. This represents an increase of 34.8 percent from the 46 establishments recorded in 2020. (Table A)

Among industry groups, specialized design activities posted the highest number of 19 establishments (30.6%). This was followed by technical testing and analysis with 14 establishments (22.6%) and legal activities with 12 establishments (19.4%).  (Figure 1 and Table 1)

Technical testing and analysis industry group employed the highest number of workers

The total employment in the professional, scientific and technical activities section of the MIMAROPA Region was recorded at 237 workers as of 15 November 2021. This indicates an increase of 37.8 percent from the 172 workers reported on the same date in 2020.

Of the total workforce for the professional, scientific and technical activities section, 226 workers or 95.4 percent were paid employees, while the remaining were working owners and unpaid workers. (Table A, Table B and Table 1)

Among industry groups, technical testing and analysis registered the highest employment of 61 workers and a 25.7 percent share to the total employment of the Professional, Scientific and Technical Activies section in the region. This was followed by architectural and engineering activities and related technical consultancy with a total of 55 workers (23.2%) and accounting, bookkeeping and auditing activities; tax consultancy with a total of 48 workers (20.3%). (Figure 2)

The Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities section recorded an average of 4 workers per establishment in 2021. This was 2.2 percent higher compared to the previous year.

Among industry groups, architectural and engineering activities and related technical consultancy had the highest average employment of 18 workers per establishment. Accounting, bookkeeping and auditing activities; tax consultancy and Legal activities followed with 5 workers and 2 workers, respectively.


Technical testing analysis industry group paid the highest average annual compensation per paid employee

In 2021, the total compensation paid by the section to its employees amounted to PhP 27,299. This translates to an average annual compensation of PhP 120,792 per paid employee, which indicates a -28.7 percent decrease from the recorded average annual pay of PhP 169,518 per paid employee in 2020. By industry group, employees from technical testing and analysis received the highest average annual compensation of PhP 165,066 per paid employee in 2021. This was followed by legal activities, and the accounting, bookkeeping and auditing activities; tax consultancy industry groups with average annual compensation per paid employee of PhP 119,111 and PhP 110,140, respectively. (Figure 3 and Table 2)


Architectural and engineering activities and related technical consultancy industry group contributed the major share to the total revenue and total expense

The total revenue generated by the Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities section in 2021 reached PhP 178,121 indicating an increase of 17.7 percent from the PhP 151,273 reported revenue in 2020. On the other hand, the total expense incurred by the section amounted to PhP 153,992 in 2021, which shows a 11.5 percent uptick from the PhP 138,117 total expense posted in 2020. Among industry groups, architectural and engineering activities and related technical consultancy contributed the highest share to Professional, Scientific and Technical activies total revenue amounting to PhP 102,997 (57.8%) in 2021. Technical testing and analysis and specialized design activities followed with a corresponding total revenue of PhP 28,843 (16.2%) and PhP 20,771 (11.7%). (Figure 4 and Table 1)

In terms of expenses, the top spender was architectural and engineering activities and related technical consultancy industry group with PhP 91,151. This translates to a 59.2 percent share to the Professional, Scientific and Technical activies total expenses. Technical testing and analysis and specialized design activities came next with incurred total expenses of PhP 24,935 (16.2%) and PhP 15,308 (9.9%), respectively. (Figure 4 and Table 1)

In 2021, the revenue per peso expense ratio of professional, scientific and technical activities section was recorded at 1.16, which reflects an increase of 5.6 percent from the recorded 1.10 revenue per expense ratio in 2020. This indicates that for every peso spent in 2021, the section generated a corresponding revenue of PhP 1.16. (Table A and Table 2)
