22 October 2024 –BOAC, MARINDUQUE. The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) Marinduque Provincial Statistical Office (PSO) successfully conducted the 28th Philippine Statistics Quiz (PSQ) Provincial Elimination on 22 October 2024, despite the adverse weather conditions caused by tropical cyclone “Kristine.” Originally slated to take place at the AVR Hall of Marinduque State University (MarSU), the event was relocated to the LMD-PESO Hall at the Provincial Capitol due to the suspension of classes and work at MarSU, ensuring the safety of participants and guests.
This year’s competition commemorated the 35th National Statistics Month (NSM) and showcased the statistical knowledge and skills of college freshmen from the province. Originally, 14 participants from five schools were expected to attend; however, due to the bad weather, only five participants were able to compete: three from MarSU and two from Marinduque Midwest College (MMC).
The PSQ serves as an annual platform for college freshmen enrolled in any public or private institution to demonstrate their proficiency in statistics. The objectives of the quiz are to assess students' competencies in statistics, promote awareness of the significance of statistics in everyday life, and highlight its crucial role in government planning and decision-making.
Ms. Gemma N. Opis, Chief Statistical Specialist of PSA-Marinduque PSO, delivered a heartfelt welcome message, thanking the guests, judges, participants, and the PSA team for their contributions to the successful event. She expressed her appreciation for everyone’s determination to proceed with the competition despite the bad weather.
The guest speaker, Ms. Marie Antonette J. Malvar, Administrative Officer II and OIC of the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office, emphasized the importance of statistics in shaping future leaders and informed decision-making. Her message was delivered by her representative.
The competition featured a panel of judges, including Engr. Richard Ragrario from DPWH Marinduque DEO, Ms. Ollie F. Davalos from the Department of Agrarian Reform, and Dr. Nestor T. Raulo from the DepED Schools Division of Marinduque, who served as the Chairman of the Board of Judges.
With three rounds of challenging questions, quizmaster SA Sonny Jr. R. De la Cruz ensured a dynamic and engaging experience for all participants. Contestants had to demonstrate their skills not only in answering questions but also in interpreting graphs, statistical tables, and charts.
At the conclusion of the event, the final results revealed that all top three winners hailed from MarSU. John Renz M. Constantino emerged as the Provincial Champion with 19 points, followed by
Neil Cyrus C. Buenaventura with 15 points, and Junie Lorenz M. Garcia with 14 points.
According to the contest rules, participants must achieve a cumulative score of at least 15 points to qualify for the Regional Championship. Consequently, both Constantino and Buenaventura will represent Marinduque in the upcoming 28th PSQ Regional Championship in Calapan City, Oriental
Mindoro, in 08 November 2024.
The PSA-Marinduque PSO congratulates all participants for their efforts and looks forward to their continued engagement in the realm of statistics.
