City of Puerto Princesa

The headline inflation in City of Puerto Princesa escalated to 7.7 percent in June 2022, from 7.3 percent in May 2022 and 1.7 percent in June 2021. This is the highest recorded inflation since January 2019. The average inflation for the first five months of the year stood at 5.7 percent. (Table A)

The increase in the city’s inflation was mainly brought by the higher annual increase in the index for food and non-alcoholic beverages at 9.9 percent; clothing and footwear, 8.1 percent; information and communication, 2.0 percent. Furthermore, higher indices of the following commodity groups during the period also factored into the uptrend in the overall inflation rate of the city:

a.    Furnishings,    household    equipment,    and    routine    household maintenance, 5.0 percent;
b.    Personal care, and miscellaneous goods and services, 4.8 percent;
c.    Alcoholic beverages and tobacco, 10.9 percent;
d.    Transport, 19.3 percent;
e.    Recreation, sport, and culture, 4.4 percent;
 

On the other hand, slow down was observed in the index of Housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels, at 4.0 percent and health, at 1.0 percent. While the rest of the commodity groups retained their previous month’s inflation rates.

Food index increased further to 10.5 percent in June 2022, from 9.5 percent in the previous month. In June 2021, the food index was lower at -1.5 percent. (Table C)

During this period, major contributors to the uptrend in the food index were higher increments for Fruits and nuts, 27.3 percent; Meat and other parts of slaughtered land animals at 19.1 percent and Milk, other dairy products and eggs, 5.0 percent. Additionally, higher growth rates were observed in the following food indices:
a.    Sugar, confectionery, and desserts, 15.6 percent;
b.    Flour, Bread and other Bakery Products, Pasta Products and other Cereals, 6.8 percent;
c.    Ready-made food and other food products n.e.c., 6.4 percent; and
d.    Oils and fats, 13.2 percent;

On the other hand, the rice and corn index slowed down at 1.5 and 0.1 percent respectively; along with Fish and other seafood, 15.6 percent and Vegetables, tubers, plantains, cooking bananas and pulses, at 14.7 percent from May 2022 inflation rates.
