Palawan

The headline inflation in Palawan increased further to 8.4 percent in June 2022, from 7.6 percent in May 2022. This is the highest recorded inflation since January 2019. Inflation in June 2021 was significantly lower at 1 percent. The average inflation for the first five months of the year stood at
6.2 percent. (Table A)

The growth in the provincial inflation can be mainly attributed to the higher annual increments in the index for food and non-alcoholic beverages at 10.8 percent; and housing, water, electricity gas and other fuels, at 4.0 percent. Furthermore, higher indices of the following commodity groups during the period also factored into the uptrend in the overall inflation rate of the province:

a.    Restaurants and accommodation services, 7.1 percent;
b.    Personal care, and miscellaneous goods and services, 5.9 percent;
c.    Clothing and footwear, 5.4 percent.
d.    Furnishings,    household    equipment,    and    routine    household maintenance, 5.7 percent;
e.    Alcoholic beverages and tobacco,4.8 percent;
f.    Recreation, sport, and culture, 5.8 percent;
g.    Health, 1.8 percent.

Food index increased further to 11.1 percent in June 2022, from 10.1 percent in the previous month. In May 2021, the food index was lower, at -2.7 percent. (Table C)

During this period, major contributors to the uptrend in the food index were higher increments for Fruits and nuts, 44.4 percent; Fish and other seafood,
10.1 percent and Sugar, confectionery, and desserts, at 23.7 percent. Additionally, higher growth rates were observed in the following food indices:
a.    Flour, Bread and Other Bakery Products, Pasta Products, And Other Cereals, 8.2 percent;
b.    Ready-made food and other food products not elsewhere classified, 10.0 percent;
c.    Meat and other parts of slaughtered land animals, 14.3 percent;
d.    Milk, other dairy products, and eggs, 3.3 percent;
e.    Oils and fats, 12.5 percent; and
f.    Corn, 4.2 percent.

Rice index registered a slowdown at 3.1 percent from 4.7 percent in May 2022.
