Alcantara’s population recorded at 16,417
The population of the municipality of Alcantara as of July 1, 2024 was 16,417 persons. This population count is based on the 2024 Census of Population (2024 POPCEN).
This count has been declared official for all purposes by the President of the Philippines through Proclamation No. 973 dated 11 July 2025, pursuant to Republic Act No. 10625, or the Philippine Statistical Act of 2013, and Executive Order No. 87, s. 2025. These mandate the conduct of periodic censuses to provide government planners, policymakers, and administrators with essential data for crafting social and economic development plans and programs.
This municipal population figure reflects the total number of persons living in the 12 barangays of the municipality as of 12:01 AM on 01 July 2024. It also includes Filipinos in Philippine embassies, consulates, and missions abroad.
The population in 2024 is lower by 754 compared with the population in 2020, and higher by 66 compared with the population in 2015. Table 1 shows the comparative results of the population in the past 4 censuses.

The municipality’s population declined by -1.07 percent
The population growth of Alcantara declined by -1.07 percent annually from 2020 to 2024. The rate at which the population grew from 2015 to 2020 is at 1.03 percent. The decline in the growth rate maybe driven by interrelated factors such as but not limited to declining fertility and birth rate, elevated mortality during the pandemic and migration activity after the pandemic.

Fifteen in every one hundred Alcantaranhon resides in Tugdan
The municipality of Alcantara comprises 12 barangays. In 2024, Barangay Tugdan recorded the highest population at 2,470, accounting for 15.0 percent of the municipal total. It was followed by the barangays of Poblacion with 2,135 residents (13.0%) and Camili with 1,670 residents (10.2%). Collectively, these three barangays comprised approximately 38.2 percent of Alcantara’s total population (Figure 1 and Table 3). Ranking fourth and fifth in terms of population were the barangays of Madalag (1,456) and Bonlao (1,405), respectively.

Barangay Lawan was the smallest barangay, in terms of population size, with only 545 persons. It was followed by Barangay San Roque with 969 persons. Their population represents 3.3 percent and 5.9 percent, respectively.
Out of the twelve barangays, there were six which had a positive annual population growth rate (APGR). Barangay Bagsik had the highest growth rate with 4.64 percent. It was followed by San Isidro (1.64%), Comod-om (1.37%), Bonlao (1.03%), Madalag (0.91%) and Poblacion (0.18 percent). The rest exhibited decline population growth rate.
