City of Puerto Princesa

The headline inflation in City of Puerto Princesa further increased to 9.3 percent in July 2022, from 7.7 percent in June 2022 and 1.3 percent in July 2021. This is the highest recorded inflation since January 2019. The average inflation for the first seven months of the year stood at 6.2 percent. (Table A)

The increase in the inflation of the city was mainly brought by the higher annual increase in the index for food and non-alcoholic beverages at 13.6 percent; Clothing and footwear, 9.7 percent; Restaurants and accommodation services, at 5.8 percent. Furthermore, higher indices of the following commodity groups during the period also factored into the uptrend in the overall inflation rate of the city:

a.    Personal care, and miscellaneous goods and services, 5.9 percent;
b.    Health, 2.7 percent;
c.    Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels, 4.1 percent;
d.    Furnishings,    household    equipment,    and    routine    household maintenance, 5.6 percent;
e.    Information and communication, 2.4 percent;
f.    Recreation, sport, and culture, 5.7 percent
g.    Alcoholic beverages and tobacco, 11.0 percent.

Meanwhile, only Transport registered a slow down for the month of July, at
18.5 percent. While Education services and Financial Services retained their previous month’s rate.

Food index increased further to 14.4 percent in July 2022, from 10.5 percent in the previous month. In July 2021, the food index was lower by -2.0 percent. (Table C)

During this period, major contributors to the uptrend in the food index were higher increments for Fish and other seafoods, 33.2 percent; Rice, 3.7 percent; and Meat and other parts of slaughtered land animals, 23.0 percent. Moreover, higher growth rates were observed in the following food indices:

a.    Sugar, confectionery, and desserts, 25.2 percent;
b.    Flour, Bread and other Bakery Products, Pasta Products and other Cereals, 9.0 percent;
c.    Milk, other dairy products and eggs, 5.7 percent;
d.    Ready-made food and other food products n.e.c., 7.7 percent; and
e.    Oils and fats, 14.7 percent;

On the other hand, indices of the following commodity groups that slowed down for the month of July 2022:
a.    Fruits and nuts, 25.5 percent;
b.    Vegetables, tubers, plantains, cooking bananas, pulses, 11.4 percent; and
c.    Corn, -1.9 percent.
