Less than half of the total households had Internet access

As of 12:01 a.m. of 01 May 2020, the province of Oriental Mindoro had a total of 215,070 households. Of these, 61.7 percent or 132,672 households reported that they have access to the Internet. This was 9.6 percentage points higher than the regional rate of 52.1 percent. (Table A and Figure 1)

Among city and municipalities, City of Calapan had the highest proportion of its households with Internet access at 74.1 percent.  This was closely followed by Gloria with 73.5 percent, and Victoria with 71.1 percent. Three other municipalities that had Internet access higher than the provincial rate include Roxas (66.6%), Puerto Galera (66.2%), and Pinamalayan (62.2%).  Meanwhile, Mansalay had the lowest proportion with less than two in every five of its households or 39.9 percent have access to the Internet. This was followed by Socorro with 45.8 percent.  (Figure 1)


City of Calapan had the most number of households in the province that have access to the Internet

In terms of share to the total number of households in the province, City of Calapan posted the highest number of households having Internet access with 19.6 percent share. This was followed by Naujan and Pinamalayan with a corresponding share to the total household who access the Internet at 12.2 percent and 10.0 percent. San Teodoro, on the other hand, posted the lowest number of households with Internet access at 1.7 percent. (Table 1) 

More than four in every five households with Internet access reported mobile broadband network as main type of Internet connection

It was reported that 82.2 percent of the households in Oriental Mindoro have Internet connection through a mobile broadband network. This is an internet connection via a handset, a card (integrated Subscriber Identity Module or SIM card) or a USB modem. (Figure 2)

On the other hand, more than one in every ten households or 10.9 percent in the province reported having Internet connection through fixed (wired) narrowband / broadband network. Internet connection through fixed (wireless) broadband network were reported by 4.0 percent of the households while 2.9 percent through satellite broadband network. (Figure 2).


Mobile broadband was the most common type of Internet connection in the City of Calapan

Across all households in the province that reported mobile broadband network as their main type of Internet connection, City of Calapan had the highest number of households with 17.7 percent out of the total 118,212 households in Oriental Mindoro. This was followed by Naujan with 12.2 percent and Pinamalayan with 9.4 percent. (Table 2)

The same set of municipalities City of Calapan (38.8%), Pinamalayan (14.2%) and Naujan (10.3%) top those reporting fixed (wired) narrowband/broadband network as their main type of Internet connection with corresponding share to the province’s 15,729 households.   (Table 2)

For the fixed (wireless) broadband network, City of Calapan posted the highest share with 26.6 percent of the total 5,757 households in the province. This was followed by Naujan (14.6%) and Gloria (10.9%). (Table 2)

Furthermore, City of Calapan had the highest share of 26.7 percent of the province’s total of 4,127 households that uses satellite broadband network as the main type of Internet connection. Gloria and Naujan followed with a share of 14.2 percent and 13.0 percent, respectively. (Table 2)


Nearly half of the households used Internet at home

Home was where most households in Oriental Mindoro connect to the Internet, with 48.0 percent of the households in 2020. This was followed by those utilizing Internet in mobility, via mobile cellular telephone or other handheld devices that are connected to a mobile phone network, with 30.8 percent share. Furthermore, Internet was also used at the workplace with 8.1 percent share, and at school with 7.2 percent share. (Table B and Figure 3)

Across all households in the province that reported their location they commonly access the Internet, City of Calapan had the highest number of households with 19.5 percent out of 134,566 households in the province who access Internet at home. Likewise, the same city posted the highest share among households that utilizes the Internet across location, namely: at the workplace (31.3%), in a private establishment (27.3%), at school (26.5%), at another person’s home (23.0%), in mobility (22.0%), at a public place (18.1%), and in an Internet café or computer shop (17.2%).  (Table B)

Outside City of Calapan, Naujan ranked next with 12.2 percent of households in the province who use the Internet at home. Similarly, Naujan posted second highest share among households who use the Internet at an Internet Café or computer shop (16.8%), in a private establishment (14.9%), in mobility (10.7%), and at the workplace (9.0%). (Table B)

Bongabong, on the other hand, ranked second among households who use the Internet at school with 15.1 percent, at a public place with 13.0 percent, and at another person’s home with 11.3 percent. (Table B).

The statistics presented in this report were based on the information provided by the respondent or any responsible household member who may provide accurate answers to the questions and give correct information about the household.  

The following data items were collected by the enumerator from a sample of 20 percent of the total households in the enumeration area/s using CPH Form 3 (Sample Household Questionnaire) or CPH Form 7 (Self-Administered Questionnaire for Sample Household):

1.    Internet access (“What type/s of internet access is/are available at home?”), and
2.  Internet use (“Where did this household member/s use the internet in the last three (3) months?”)
