Palawan (excluding Puerto Princesa City) recorded 262.9 thousand housing units in 2020

Based on the 2020 Census of Population and Housing (2020 CPH), a total of 262,876 housing units were listed in the province of Palawan (excluding Puerto Princesa City). Of this total, 228,788 housing units were occupied by households / household population as of 01 May 2020.  Between 2020 CPH and 2015 Census of Population (PopCen), the total number of housing units went up by 52,784 or 25.0 percent. Moreover, a total of 85,995 housing units or 49.0 percent were added from the reported 176,881 housing units in 2010. (Figure 1 and Table A)

Between census years 2020 and 2015, the number of occupied housing units increased by 34,727 or 18.0 percent. In 1960, the reported total number of occupied housing units was 27,276, that is, 11.9 percent of the number of occupied housing units in the province in the 2020 CPH. (Figure 2 and Table B)

Occupancy rate was posted at 87.0 percent

In the province of Palawan (excluding Puerto Princesa City), the occupancy rate or the ratio of the total occupied housing units to the total number of housing units in 2020 was posted at 87.0 percent. This was 0.8 percentage point lower than the MIMAROPA Region’s 87.8 percent occupancy rate. The province’s occupancy rate five years ago was higher at 92.4 percent. This means that there were more vacant housing units in 2020 than in 2015. (Table 1)

Among its municipalities, Sofronio Española posted the highest occupancy rate of 94.3 percent. Balabac ranked second with 93.0 percent occupancy rate. Meanwhile, the lowest occupancy rate was recorded in the municipality of Cagayancillo at 74.5 percent. (Table 1)

Bataraza had the greatest number of occupied housing units

The top three municipalities with the largest population sizes are also the top three regions in terms of number of occupied housing units. Bataraza had the highest number of occupied housing units in the province at 21,058. Said municipality had     9.2 percent share of the total occupied housing units in the province. (Table 1)

Taytay ranked second with 19,360 occupied housing units (8.5%), while Narra came in third with 19,334 (8.5%). Meanwhile, Kalayaan which had the smallest population size in the province, recorded the least number of occupied housing units at 34 (0.01%). (Table 1)

There were 101 households per 100 occupied housing units

A total of 230,809 households were recorded in the region in 2020. This translates to 101 households in every 100 occupied housing units, which was the same with the reported ratio in 2015. (Table 2)

Across the province, Cagayancillo recorded the highest ratio of 110 households for every 100 occupied housing units. Followed by Coron and Kalayaan with the ratio of 103 households per 100 occupied housing units. (Table 2 and Table B)

There were 4.0 persons per occupied housing units

On the average, there were 4.0 persons per occupied housing unit in Palawan (excluding Puerto Princesa City). This was lower than the estimated 4.4 persons recorded in 2015. (Figure 3, Table C and Table D)

Among all the municipalities in Palawan, Cagayancillo posted the highest ratio of 5.5 households for every occupied housing unit. Balabac ranked second with a ratio of 4.6 households per occupied housing unit. The municipalities of Taytay and Linapacan followed each with the ratio of 4.3 households per occupied housing unit. Furthermore, the municipalities of Magsaysay, Cuyo and Araceli registered each with 4.2 households per occupied housing unit. These municipalities had their household population to occupied housing unit ratio higher than Palawan’s ratio. Meanwhile, Kalayaan had the lowest ratio of 2.7 households per occupied unit. Table C)

The statistics presented in this Special Release were based on the information provided by the household respondents or any responsible member who provided answers to the questions and gave information about the characteristics of the housing units.
